With a goal of getting to the finish of the campaign, Newtown High School’s boys’ track and field team is striving to also have some success in meets this spring.

“We’re excited about the season. We have some new and promising freshmen and sophomores, as well as a solid group of junior and senior returners,” Coach Becky Osborne said.

At full strength, the team comprises 60 or so athletes. As preseason unfolded this week, the track team, not unlike other programs, was without roughly 20 percent of its members due to coronavirus protocol.

“We’re going to do the best with what we’ve got,” said Osborne, acknowledging that the lineup may be fluid for the duration of the season.

Many of these team members used a shortened winter slate as preparation for the spring season, set to get started with an April 19 visit to New Milford at 4 pm.

Captains are pole vaulter Sam Edwards, thrower Grant Baker, sprinters/jumpers Hampton Cobb and Ethan Appiah, middle distance runner Drew Poseno, distance runner Matt Sortino, and sprinter Aiden Hall.

Others to watch include throwers Nick Sortino and Lance Featherstone; distance runners Carmeron Whorf, Aidan Budge, and Connor Dullinger; and sprinters Will Hornby, Will Elkins, Brock Dukate, Andrew Sweirbut, and Caleb Smith.
