Boys' Lacrosse Team Doubles Up Two Foes As Gerace Nets Six In One Game
Newtown High School's boys' lacrosse team doubled up two nonconference opponents at Blue & Gold Stadium, defeating Simsbury 10-5 on April 11 and Southington 12-6 on April 14.
In the win over Simsbury, the Nighthawks got four goals and an assist from Nick Stockwell, a goal and three assists off the stick of Marcus Gerace, and two goals to go along with an assist from Graham Spencer. Kyle June, Cole Stockwell, and Nate Pickard added net-finders.
The Nighthawks fell behind 1-0 just 47 seconds from the start but proceeded to reel off the next six tallies. June tied things and Spencer gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Gerace found the back of the net with the Hawks a man up, whipping home a high, hard shot from the left side. Nick Stockwell netted his first for a 4-1 lead through one quarter of play.
It was a Stockwell-to-Stockwell connection for the first goal of the second quarter as Cole Stockwell finished off a pretty passing sequence for a 5-1 lead. Pickard made it 6-1 after Cole Stockwell and Henri Quirk worked hard to create turnovers.
Goaltender Hudson Wheat made some big saves and the Nighthawks cruised into halftime up 6-2 and never looked back.
In the win over Southington, Gerace led the offensive charge with six goals — a hat-trick times two — and an assist. Pickard and Nick Stockwell both scored twice, Luke Stewart and Jack Meade each notched a goal and an assist, and Cole Stockwell had an assist. After a full week between games, this was a fast return to game action following the victory over Simsbury.
"Proud of our effort. We learned a lot about ourselves. Quick turnaround, good team, adversity throughout. Great team win," said NHS Coach Tony Fitti, whose team improved to 3-0 to begin the slate.
