Stay Safe, Stay Home — but do not forget to dance! That may be the motto of one Newtown neighborhood, where the street was lined Sunday afternoon, April 19, with dancers of all shapes, sizes, ages — and talent. What everyone had, though, was enthusiasm and spirit.

“ [It was] one of the funny videos that people forward around on [Facebook],” said dance party organizer, Deborah DeBlasi, that gave her the idea to localize the fun. A person named Rachel Smith LaComb originally shared the idea, she said in a recent e-mail to The Newtown Bee. “I have no idea who she is or where they are.”

DeBlasi picked up on what she recognized as a terrific way to “see” her neighbors and get them moving. “I said, we can SO do that. And everyone was in.” She shared the post with some of her neighbors, “and then we made a plan on [Facebook] messenger and text. We heard it would be a beautiful day on Sunday and we set the time. We had neighbors that couldn’t do that time, so we video taped them later.”

Even a neighbor who lives part time in Florida did not want to be left out of the action, “so his wife video taped him dancing and sent it to me to add to the video,” said DeBlasi.

It is not the first time that the neighborhood has pulled together for an outdoor party. In March, as a matter of fact, neighbors celebrated Maya Raslan in a safe manner with a car parade on her 13th birthday.

The neighbors tend to do “lots of ‘bus stop’ celebrations,” DeBlasi said, and she is happy to share the dance party video with Bee readers. “We are so blessed,” DeBlasi added, “to have a neighborhood that loves to find the fun and joy in things.”
