Newtown High School’s boys’ volleyball team earned its first wins of the season, besting host Kolbe Cathedral 3-0 (25-4, 25-21, 25-11) on April 14, then defeating host Pomperaug of Southbury 3-0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-12).

In the victory over Kolbe, Thad Teraszkiewicz recorded five aces, six kills, and four digs. Jasin Kodzodziku notched four aces, seven kills, and two blocks.

Against Pomperaug, Aidan Stout had five digs, eight kills, and six aces. Teraszkiewicz had three digs, ten kills, and four aces. Luke Hannon compiled six kills and two aces.

The Nighthawks fell 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-14) to visiting Joel Barlow of Redding on April 20, and saw their record stand at 2-2.

Matt Mattera had five kills and two blocks. Teraszkiewicz recorded eight kills and seven digs. Hannon had three kills and three blocks.

“Barlow is a very disciplined team and they play very well together. They had enough experience on the floor to carry them through. They will be very tough to beat this year,” Newtown Coach Sandy Doski said. “Barlow is the team to beat this year.”

The young Newtown team’s first wins were notable given this is a completely new-to-varsity lineup after the spring 2020 sports season was canceled.

“To get a couple wins under their belts boosted their confidence up and was crucial coming into today’s game,” Doski said after facing Barlow. “I was really happy with the way they kept their composure. Things were going downhill fast and they didn’t get down on themselves.”

The Nighthawks have to improve in a variety of areas, beginning with their serves, where it all starts, and other elements of the game will be better set up to succeed, Doski believes.
