NHS Track And Field Teams Sweep

Newtown High’s track teams defeated Kolbe Cathedral, Pomperaug, and Stratford in meets at Blue & Gold Stadium April 17 and 18.

Grace Lyons took first in the 400 meter run in 1:02.4, qualifying for the state championships. Hannah Snayd was first in the 800 in 2:32.4 followed by freshman Leah Morris in 2:37.6. Aashni Shetty took first in the 110 hurdles with a state qualifying time of 16.9. Kayleigh Troy came in second with a 17.8. Shetty was first in the 300 hurdles, clocking in at 50.9 to qualify for states.

All three relays took first: The 4x100 team of Ella Hall, Skyler Howard, Grace Lyons, and Amanda Reyes (51.4); the 4x400 of Howard, Hannah Stowe, Ryan Heim-Sherwood, and Snayd (4:25.4); and the 4x800 team comprising Snayd, Leah Morris, Keira Budge, and Izzy Caron (10:09.3).

Kaelin Rising was first in the shot-put in with a throw of 27-11. Amanda Reyes was second (25-7). In discus, Rising threw 88-4 to qualify; Reyes (81-2) and Isabel Khazadian (70-2) followed.

Kayleigh Troy earned first in the high jump with a qualifying height of 4-8. Shetty won both long jump (15-5) and triple jump (33-2) with qualifying marks. Stowe, a freshman, took second in the long jump with a 14-7. Troy took second in the triple jump with a qualifying mark of 31-8.

In the boys’ meet, Caleb Smith won the 100 in 11.1 and was followed by Aydyn Gonzalez in 11.4 and Dylan Magazu in 11.5, all qualifying for states. Brock Dukate won the 200 in 23.6 to qualify. Hayden Bobowick took first in the 400 in 52.3 to qualify. In the 1600, Noah Massotta was tops in 4:45. Soheib Dissa led the way in the 3200 in 9:51 to qualify. Massotta took second in 10:52.

Kevin Murray won the 110 hurdles in 15.6 and Oliver Guzy claimed first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.3 — both qualifying times.

The 4x100 relay of Gonzalez, Smith, Bobowick and Magazu won in 44.7. The 4x800 team of Elias Brady, Guzy, Bobowick, and Dissa took first in 3:43.3. The winning 4x800 relay comprised Curtis Shaw, Tanner Smith, Massotta, and Dissa (8:47.3). The 100 and 800 relays qualified for states.

In the shot-put, Dukate won with a toss of 42-10, Murray was next with a 41-9, both qualifying, and Magazu was third (37-5). In the long jump, Guzy was first with a 20-6 to qualify. Gonzalez won the triple jump with a 38-9.5. Tyler Weiss was second in the triple jump with a 35-1 and Justyn Gonzalez took third with a 34.5.
