The Garden Club of Newtown invites fellow Newtown residents to join club members for a presentation, “Bats are the Best,” planned for Tuesday, April 28, at 1 pm.

Carrie Szwed, the education director at White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield, will present the program in The Olga Knoepke Memorial Meeting Room of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

Szwed will present a video showing the many functions of bats in the important work of plant pollination. Positive facts about bats will be emphasized in order to counter negative notions about the bat population.

Bats are considered super-pollinators with specific abilities benefitting native gardens and habitats.

All are welcome, there is no charge, and reservations are not needed.

Spring Plant Sale May 2

A few days later the club will host a Spring Plant Sale.

The Garden Club of Newtown invites readers to join it on Saturday, May 2, when members will be set up on the front lawn of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street, from 9 am until noon.

Club members will be selling perennial and annual plants from their own gardens which are hardy to the area at reasonable prices.

The funds generated will go into a fund that provides scholarships for Newtown college students. Applications are currently being accepted for a scholarship available for the 2026-27 academic year.
