Upsets are what make the sports world go round, and one of the biggest upsets in the history of the men’s basketball league at the Newtown Health & Fitness Club took place late last week.

In quarterfinal playoff action, eighth-seeded Colonial Mitsubishi shocked the top-seeded Villa Restaurant, 66-60. Cody Forte scored 23 points and Brian Meath added 22 to lead the winners who rarely won during the regular season only to put it all together in time for the playoffs. Dave Waite added 15 points in the win.

The Villa Restaurant, which had been idle for several weeks, never found the rhythm that had led it to a 15-2 record this season. Dan O’Handley did scored 30 points and Chris Oberhammer added 22 but it would not be enough. Colonial Mitsubishi was on a mission.

The other six teams were slated to begin their playoff action this week with second seeded Marcucilli Agency will face seventh-seeded Denmo’s of Southbury, third-seeded My Place Restaurant will play Berkshire Motors, and fourth-seeded Inn at Newtown will play fifth seeded World of Wine & Liquors.
