Scholarships Available

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified.

A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

Three more scholarships have been made available this week. Details follow:

Hibernian Book Award — The Danbury Ancient Order of Hibernians and Ladies Ancient Order will offer two $200 book awards to local high school graduates. Applicants must be referred by a member of the AOH or LAOH Danbury divisions to qualify for the award. This may be a parent, grandparent, relative, or friend.

Interested students should complete an application and a 250-word essay on any topic from Irish History by May 8. Applications are available in the Career Center.

Society of Creative Arts of Newtown Scholarship (SCAN) — SCAN will award this scholarship to graduating high school seniors who will attend college as an art majors in one of the visual art disciplines.

The student’s portfolio of at least 12 pieces will be reviewed by the Selection Committee during an interview to take place on May 14.
