HealingNewtown Programs And Workshops, May 11-18

Newtown Cultural Arts Commission (NCAC), Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut, and The Connecticut Office of the Arts have come together to create HealingNewtown Arts Space at 5 Queen Street.

The following events have recently been added to the arts center’s schedule. Search The Bee’s online archives for previously announced programs or HealingNewtown.org for a full list of upcoming events. Reservations are requested for most workshops and can be done through the art space’s website. Call 203-364-9230 for additional information.

*Saturday, May 11, from 2 to 5 pm, (Pre-) Mother’s Day Make-Over Workshop.

Katherine Giotti will be bringing her Mac artistry for a make-up application workshop.

She’ll bringing along friends to focus on hair styles, attendees should bring their own snacks and drinks, HealingNewtown will provide the fellowship and fun.

*Monday, May 13, 4:30 pm, I Spy Digital Photography Workshop.

Join Craig Norton for a one-hour workshop, and learn how to create your own I Spy images using digital photography.

*Tuesdays, May 14, 21 and 28 and June 4, Ukulele Workshops.

Using Hal Leonard’s Standardized Curriculum, students will learn playing posture, holding and fretting notes, strumming basics, tuning, chord progressions, and how to play songs, during four, one-hour sessions. Each student will receive a packet of music they can take home with them.

*Saturday, May 18, 10 am, Bring the Hoopla: Hoop Making & Hooping Fun.

A fun and creative morning for all ages. Participants will spend two hours decorating their own “professional-grade” hoop to take home, after and learn the art of hooping through musical hoopla, demonstrations, instruction and a freestyle hoop session.

*Also on Saturday, May 18, from 1 to 3 pm, My Circles Of Love presents: Drum Circle & Rhythmic Fun for the Whole Family!

No experience necessary. This free, intergenerational and interactive drum circle and rhythm-fun session, facilitated by Lydia Smith of Westport’s Drumming With Lydia, uses drums and percussion instruments to build community, reduce stress, enhance creativity, share self expression with worldly rhythms, boost the immune system, and provide students with a fun experience in a supportive environment. In addition, participants will make, decorate and take home their own musical “rain stick.”

The program is for ages 6 and up.
