Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team had a lopsided win and hard-fought defeat, and the golf and tennis squads continue to compete at a high level. A recap of these Nighthawk teams from the final days of April:

Laxmen Fall To Barlow, Rout West Springfield

The boys’ lacrosse team suffered a 9-4 loss to Joel Barlow of Redding on April 24. Deegan Beauchemin scored two goals in the setback.

They bounced back in convincing fashion, with a 16-3 win at West Springfield on April 27. Jake Ball led the way with six goals and an assist, and Dan Hebert had two goals and five assists. Bubba Condon had two goals and two assists, and Alec Beauchemin and Tom Bauer both had two goals and an assist. Deegan Beauchemin scored a goal and added an assist, and Logan Walsh added a goal. Tyler Hanley had 11 of his team’s 37 ground ball scoops. Goaltender Evan Isaacs made seven saves.

Golfers Win Fourth Straight

The Nighthawk golfers made it four wins in a row with a trio of victories this past week to improve to 7-3 this season. On April 24, the Nighthawks visited the Masuk Panthers at Whitney Farms Golf Course. This proved to be a difficult day for both teams as Newtown held on to shoot a 196 to Masuk’s 201.

The Nighthawks were led by the play of captain Brian LeBlanc as the junior shot 45. Scores of 50 by Colin Patrick and by Graham Hubbert contributed to the victory, and Vivek Tedla shot a 51.

On April 25, the Nighthawks defeated the Immaculate Mustangs at Richter Park Golf Course. Newtown shot a 162 and Immaculate finished with a 229. The Nighthawks were again led by the play of LeBlanc, who shot a 36.

Newtown hosted Stratford at Rock Ridge Country Club on April 30 and won by shooting a 148 to Stratford’s 169. LeBlanc shot a 34, Patrick had a 37, Chris Erickson shot a 38, and Hubbert had a 39.

Girls’ Tennis Unbeaten

Newtown’s girls’ tennis squad defeated Brookfield 6-1 on April 24, topped Weston 5-2 on April 29, and blanked Immaculate of Danbury 7-0 on April 30 to improve to 10-0. Against Brookfield, the top three singles players — Caroline Kelly, Lauren Beier, and Mia Terracino — all won, as did each of the doubles teams: Stephanie Roman/Julia Frattaroli, Annie Beier/Lauren Frazzetta, and Grace Winans/Rachel Durno.

In the win over Weston, No. 2 singles player Lauren Beier and No. 4 player Aimee Alexander came out on top. All three doubles tandems — Roman/Frattaroli, Annie Beier/Frazzetta, and Winans/Meghan Logan — came out on top.

In the victory over Immaculate, singles players Kelly, Lauren Beier, Lily Mittleman, and Emily Jerris were all victorious in two sets. The doubles teams of Roman/Frattaroli, Annie Beier/Frazzetta, and Winans/Logan also won in two sets.

Boys’ Tennis Team Playing Well

The boys tennis team defeated Brookfield and Masuk each by 7-0 scores April 24 and 25, then fell 5-2 to Weston on April 29 to carry an 8-2 overall record into a May 1 clash with Joel Barlow, which Newtown won by a 5-2 score. In the win over Brookfield, top singles player Cam McCleary battled back to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 over Tyler Goldstein. Each of Newtown’s other victories came in the minimum two sets. Singles winners were Sean Elliott, Ricky Fuentes, and Yossi Kohrman-Glaser. Doubles winners were the teams of Keaton McCleary/Nic Klein, Matt Carino/Kunal Marwah, and Wes Morlock/Matt Mossbarger.

Against Masuk, singles victories were earned by Tyler Ruefenacht, Elliott, Klein, and Keaton McCleary. In doubles action, the winning tandems were Mike Dutsar/Carino, James Frazzetta/Peter Winans, and Charlie Poarch/Jordan Trager.

Newtown fell 5-2 to Weston, suffering its first loss in SWC play this spring. Weston is the only team to have beaten the Hawks, also coming out on top in a match that didn’t count in the conference standings to begin the campaign. The Hawks got wins at first and third doubles as the tandems of Ruefenacht/ Klein, and Marwah/Dutsar were victorious.

Newtown Coach Marty Margulies notes that this match may be a preview of things to come in the South-West Conference tournament finals. “And the individual matches that we lost today were competitive enough to make me believe that we can turn at least some of them around,” Margulies added.

Margulies was pleased with the performances of Marwah and Dutsar, and added that No. 2 singles player Elliott managed to push one of the SWC’s best players, David Friedman, in spite of midmatch hip dislocation troubles. Elliott ultimately fell 5-7, 4-6.
