Although the South-West Conference competition, on the whole, has improved significantly in recent years, Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team continues to dominate in some of its matchups.

The Nighthawks had a 17-2 triumph at Immaculate of Danbury on April 25 and toppled visiting Bunnell of Stratford 14-4, at Blue & Gold Stadium on April 29 to improve to 8-1-1 overall.

Against Immaculate, Elena Sughrue and Keeley Kortze both had three goals, Ali Kelleher had one goal and four assists, Maggie McInerney had three goals, and Julia Gerace scored twice. Gia Corso, Rylee Harrell, Isabella Butler, Ella Hage, Erin Phaneuf, and Summer Pisacich all had goals. Butler had two assists, and Corso and Phaneuf both had assists.

In the win over Bunnell, Harrell had four goals and two assists, Kelleher netted three goals and an assist, Sughrue and Gerace both had two goals, and Kortze scored once and added an assist. Shea Murphy and Corso both scored, Butler had two assists, and Gerace also assisted a goal.

Newtown Coach Maura Fletcher liked the way her team played in these games, particularly with counter attacks.

“We worked on our transition game, pushing fast breaks,” Fletcher said.

The schedule looked to be very challenging Thursday when Ridgefield hosts Newtown at 4:30 pm and again on Saturday, May 4, with a 2 pm makeup contest at Cheshire. Both of these nonconference teams are top-ten in the state, Fletcher noted.

“Great tests. I love these hard, out of conference games. It just makes us better in the long run for our conference tournament,” the coach said.
