Sugar Street At Elm Drive Crash

Camille Stopforth, 21, Monroe, told Newtown police that she had stopped at the stop sign at the northern end of Elm Drive around 3:01 pm, Wednesday, April 21, when she was waved into traffic by the operator of a vehicle in the eastbound straight or right turn only lane on Sugar Street.

Stopforth, who was operating a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L, told police she did not see the 2009 Honda CR-V EX that had been traveling east on Sugar Street before the Chrysler minivan collided with the Honda.

Melinda R. Birch, 52, was operating the Honda compact SUV. She told police she was traveling on Sugar Street on the yellow center line. She stated the minivan made a left turn in front of her.

The front of the minivan struck the front of the Honda.

Hook & Ladder firefighters and a Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps crew also responded to the crash.

Birch was transported to the hospital. No injuries were reported to Stopforth, nor to the three passengers in the minivan.

Stopforth was given a verbal warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

Birch was given a verbal warning for restricted use of a left-hand lane on divided limited access highways.

Hit & Run

Luis Martins, 28, of Danbury, was operating a 2015 Toyota Tundra Double Cab on Wasserman Way around 5:25 pm, Wednesday, April 23.

Martins told police he was in the left turn lane, making the turn from Wasserman onto Berkshire, when a Jeep Wrangler behind him also turned in the left turn lane. The Jeep struck the right rear bumper of the pickup truck Martins was driving, leaving a scuff mark.

Both vehicles continued their turn onto Berkshire. Martins turned into the parking lot of 25 Berkshire, but the Jeep continued westbound without stopping.

Martins and a minor passenger in the truck with him were both uninjured. They were both wearing seat belts.

DUI, Failure To Drive Right

Newtown Police and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to Little Brook Lane near Button Shop Road on Thursday, April 22, after a vehicle went off the road. Police arrested Dean Vincent Hunter-Cutrona, 56, of Monroe, after determining he had been driving while under the influence.

Hunter-Cutrona had been traveling southbound on Little Brook Lane around 8:28 pm. The 2012 Mazda 3i he was operating drifted off the left side (northbound) of the roadway and onto the grass. The driver’s side of the car struck a Frontier utility pole.

The vehicle then continued southbound, off the northbound side of the road, and across the driveway of 10 Little Brook Lane, where it re-entered the roadway and came to rest.

Hunter-Cutrona, who was wearing a seat belt, reported no injuries, but NVAC personnel did an evaluation; Hunter-Cutrona declined transport to the hospital.

He was placed under arrest and transported to Newtown Police Department for processing, where he also charged with the DUI and failure to drive to the right.

Hunter-Cutrona was released on a $500 appearance bond and given a May 5 appearance at Danbury Superior Court.

Honda vs Subaru

A 2004 Honda Accord EX being operated by Lesley T. Blume, 28, of Southbury, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road near Queen Street around 4:03 pm, Thursday, April 22.

At the same time, Andrew T. Perrone, 32, of New Milford, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road, operating a 2012 Subaru Impreza.

As Perrone was approaching the driveway of 25 Church Hill Road, Blume attempted to make a left turn, into that driveway. Perrone pulled to the right in an attempt to avoid the Honda, but was unable to in time and the passenger side front end of the Honda struck the driver’s side front end of the Subaru.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. No injuries were reported on scene.

Blume was given a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way to oncoming traffic while making a left turn.

Perrone was issued a misdemeanor summons for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended operator license.

BMW vs Audi

Newtown police report a 2013 BMW x3 being operated by Dorothy Dieobi, 56, of Newtown, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road around 11:51 am Saturday, April 24.

At the time, a 2019 Audi A7 Prestige S-line being operated by Joseph O. Eppers, 52, of Sandy Hook, was stopped in the eastbound travel lane of Berkshire, waiting to make a left turn onto Bennetts Bridge Road.

The front of the BMW struck the rear of the Audi.

Both drivers, and a passenger in each vehicle, were wearing seat belts. There were no injuries reported.

Dieobi was given a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
