K. Michael Snyder

Respected Community Leader

K. Michael Snyder, 70, of Newtown, died unexpectedly but peacefully in his home, the evening of April 25. He was born in Wilmington, Del., June 28, 1941, a son of Elizabeth (Leary) and Walter Snyder. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 43 years, Margaret “Peggy” Snyder, who passed away just 18 months before him, and his brother, Donald Snyder, of Wilmington.

He is survived by adoring daughters Claudia Snyder Romano of Danbury and Heather L. Snyder of Watertown.

The Snyders moved with their daughters to Newtown in 1979 and immediately loved their town and the friends they made here. Mr Snyder took an immediate interest in volunteer opportunities and soon also began supporting his community in a political forum. He served terms on the Newtown Legislative Council and was a member of the Board of Selectmen. He was an active Rotarian, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and served on the board of directors for numerous organizations — most notably that of Newtown Savings Bank.

John Trentacosta, president of Newtown Savings Bank, recalled Mr Snyder as “a terrific guy. He was kind, gentle, and had a great sense of humor. Mike was active in his community and had a 20-year relationship as trustee of Newtown Savings Bank. He touched everyone’s lives whom he met, and will be sorely missed by all of us.”

Mr Snyder’s relationship with Peggy and his daughters, though, was his proudest accomplishment. The Snyders enjoyed traveling to many places together, whether it be as a couple, with friends, or with their girls. If there was golf to be played, he played it. Often.

He loved the ocean, and the Delaware shore was one of his very favorite places to be. It was a hub of family activity throughout his lifetime.

“Mike was a great friend,” said former state representative Julia Wasserman. “Mike and I served on many boards and committees together. Whatever board or committee he got on, he participated 100 percent; he didn’t just loan his name to it,” she said.

“I knew him to be a wonderful family man. He was great with the kids, and devoted and loyal to Peggy. Mike was a man of his word. He is sorely missed,” said Mrs Wasserman.

Funeral services took place May 2, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Newtown. Burial at Newtown Village Cemetery will be held privately. Honan Funeral Home, Newtown, assisted the family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to either Hearts Around the World, PO Box 5336, Brookfield CT 06804 or The Newtown Rotary Foundation, PO Box 263, Newtown CT 06470, in honor of Mr Snyder’s life and memory.
