Shetty Breaks O’Grady Relays Long Jump Record As Track Teams Shine

Newtown High School’s track and field teams had tremendous showings at the O’Grady Relays at Danbury High School on April 25. The girls’ squad, led by Aashni Shetty’s meet record performance in the long jump, earned second place behind Bloomfield. The boys were 25th and had some stellar races, jumps, and throws.

For the girls, Bloomfield scored 70 points and Newtown had 52.50. “They beat several other conference champion teams from indoor track and field and really showed the depth that the team has developed all season long,” Newtown Coach Nick Fraticelli said. “The boys had several personal best performances as well and made huge improvements in their relay qualifications. We were really happy with how well the teams did.”

Shetty’s winning jump was 17-04, edging out a Bloomfield jumper who had a 17-03. Four girls surpassed the 2017 record of 16-06.75.

In the 300 hurdles, Shetty took fourth in a time of 47.51 and Kelsey Brennan came in tenth in 50.88.

The 4x100 relay team comprising Summer-Rose Chaljub, Jessie Moore, Abby Manka, and Lola Kessler came in fourth in 51.02. Newtown’s 4x200 team of Chaljub, Manka, Brynn Lozer, and Charlotte Miller was seventh in 1:53.02. The 4x400 team of Moore, Leah Morris, Rylan Kennedy, and Brennan came in sixth in 4:17.14. Newtown’s 4x800, Rachael Albrecht, Clare Csaszar, Natalie delCampo, and Leah Morris was second in 10:20.73. The 1600 sprint medley relay of Victoria Baghdady, Hannah Stowe, Kennedy, and Ana Morris was fifth in 4:36.82. The distance medley relay of Ana Morris, Albrecht, delCampo, and Annabelle Foley came in seventh in 14:01.29.

In the high jump event Isabella Walder took fifth with a 4-08 and Anna Parsons was tenth, also with a 4-08. Kessler was third in the pole vault clearing 9-06. In addition to Shetty’s long jump win, Violet Assante-LaBash placed eighth in the long jump with a 15-08.50. Jamie Humphreys came in ninth in the discus throw with an 88-05. In the javelin, Mackenzie Penrod was ninth with an 84-10 and Humphreys tenth with an 83-10.

For the boys, the 4x100 relay of Jayden Taylor, Noah Kooper, Tanner Smith, and Justyn Gonzalez was seventh in 44.57. The 4x400 team comprising Kooper, Ny’Cere Patterson, Quinn Velez, and James D’Amico was eighth in 3:36.10. The 4x800 team of Ubay Dissa, Orion Lowery, Mitchell Greenhaw, and Duncan Kolb was seventh in a time of 8:39.30. The distance medley relay team of Dissa, Sebastian Colburn, Greenhaw, and Lowery came in tenth in 11:29.30.

Owen Sullivan placed eighth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-06.

Both NHS squads will host New Fairfield and Notre Dame Prep at Blue & Gold Stadium Tuesday, May 6 at 4 pm.
