Dropping From The Ranks Of The Unbeaten

By Kim J. Harmon

Undefeated no more.

Newtown High School came into the week (that is, April 26 through May 2) with four undefeated teams but finally lost one of them when the surprising baseball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-5 defeat at the hands of Staples at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.

But the girls’ lacrosse team (10-0), girls’ tennis team (8-0) and girls’ track team (8-0) remain unscathed despite some challenges (one slight and one not so slight) this week. More challenges – especially for the girls’ track team, which will face Weston in less than two weeks – are on the way.

Rolling along.

After four consecutive 7-0 sweeps, the Newtown High School girls’ tennis team was finally slowed – a little bit – by Masuk last week at Wolfe Park in Monroe. But with a 5-2 win there and sweeps of New Milford and Brookfield the Lady Nighthawks continued to roll along and improved to 8-0 overall, 6-0 in the South-West Conference.

As Lauren Nemeth, Kristene Salbu and Ashley Gabor earned their singles victories at Masuk, Sarah Salbu had the misfortune of suffering one of the two match losses – a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 2 singles. And as the tandems of Jill Tanner/Emily Fields and Katie Serock/Jenna Moser continued to dominate with easy wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, Nikia McFadden and Erin Nemeth dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision.

But the ‘Hawks got back to their usual form, registering their fifth and sixth sweeps of the 2006 season and have now won 53 of 56 individual matches.

Against New Milford, Lauren Nemeth had a bit of a first-set struggle with Christina Natale before easing her way to a 7-5, 6-0 win and Sarah Salbu had to fight her way to a 6-4, 6-4 win over Becky Riddle at No. 2 singles.

Against Brookfield, the ‘Hawks had little trouble along the way and got a chance to see the No. 3 doubles tandem of Veronica Parsloe and Charlotte Manos record a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dora Keller and Emily Bodner.

The ‘Hawks – currently ranked No. 2 in CIAC Class L – were slated to host Immaculate and New Fairfield on Thursday and Friday before visiting Stratford next Monday. Their biggest match of the season, though, comes next Wednesday when they host 6-2 Joel Barlow.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Newtown 15, Lauralton Hall 5; Newtown 8, Branford 5; Newtown 17, Bethel 2

Although the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team has been breezing along in 2006, it has been faced with stiff challenges on three occasions and all three times came through.

The first was back on April 6 when the Lady Nighthawks – currently ranked eighth in Connecticut according to laxpower.com – defeated powerhouse Cheshire, 16-15. The second time less than a week later when the ‘Hawks overcame South-West Conference rival Joel Barlow, 10-8.

And the third time was Saturday at the James L. MacVeigh Athletic Complex in Branford.

The locals took an 8-0 record into that game with an offense that had scored better than 16 goals a game, but the Lady Hornets took the sting out of that offense early and had the ‘Hawks in a 4-2 halftime hole.

But Branford could only keep the Newtown offense down for so long. Katie Sudby, Lauren Ciccomoscolo and Moira Collier scored two goals apiece while Courtney Gleason and Jen Greenwood scored one goal apiece as the ‘Hawks rallied for the win. Karli Beitel notched a pair of assists while Erica Vacaro, Sudby, Ciccomoscolo had one apiece. Kerrie Canavan made 11 saves to preserve the win.

The win over Branford came sandwiched between wins over Bethel (17-2) and Lauralton Hall (15-5) as the locals improved to 10-0. The ‘Hawks are only one of two CIAC Division I teams (Darien is the other) still undefeated, with the locals currently ranked ahead of the 7-0 Blue Wave.

In the win over Bethel last week, Kim Solheim and Ciccomoscolo notched four goals apiece while Libby Feltch added two. But the bigger story was the 11 assists recorded by Beitel, who tied a school record earlier in the season (it was nine, then) and now has the record all to herself.

Libby Feltch added two goals as Beitel, Gleason, Collier, Curran, Stephanie Soder, Betsy Vendel and Lauren Clark all hit the back of the net. Jen Greenwood chipped in with a pair of assists.

In the win over Lauralton Hall, Lauren Ciccomoscolo scored five goals to give her a team-high 31. Rachel Maley added three goals and a pair of assists as Katie Sudby recorded three goals (becoming the seventh Newtown player to score better than 10 goals this season).

Courtney Gleason had a pair of goals and an assist while senior co-captain Karli Beitel added a goal and two assists, giving her a team-high 40 assists (and 60 points) for the season. Moira Collier chipped in with a goal and Carly Curran added an assist.

The ‘Hawks hosted New Milford on Thursday night at Blue & Gold Stadium and will visit New Fairfield next Tuesday before returning home next Thursday night to host Pomperaug at Blue & Gold Stadium.

BASEBALL

Bethel 2, Newtown 1; Newtown 16, New Fairfield 3; Staples 6, Newtown 5; Newtown 5, Notre Dame 0

No one said they were invincible.

But while most people believed the Newtown High School baseball team would show itself able to challenge for a South-West Conference championship, an 8-0 start (highlighted with a 5-0 win over perennial powerhouse Notre Dame) was certainly more than anyone could have expected.

That eight-game winning streak came to an end, however, with a thrilling 6-5 loss to Staples of Westport last Friday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport. And after a 16-3 shellacking of New Fairfield on Saturday, the Nighthawks suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Bethel to drop to 9-2 overall.

The most exciting game of the week, though, was the loss to Staples. In the top of the second, Brian Shimko blasted a one-out triple to deep centerfield that scored Peter Oggeri and then scored himself on a two-out single by Alex Dolan.

In the top of the third, Ryan McGrath singled, Steve Vichiola sacrificed and reached on a throwing error and moments later stole second to put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly by Steve Marks plated McGrath and a single by Shimko plated Vichiola to give the ‘Hawks a 4-0 lead.

Meanwhile, McGrath was pitching pretty well until things unraveled for him and the ‘Hawks in the bottom of the fourth. A single and two consecutive walks loaded the bases for the Wreckers, who scored their first run on a fielder’s choice grounder to short, but then things got worse for the locals with a throwing error, a hit batsman, a sharp single at the third base line (which Mike Chapin speared to save two runs) and a hard single to center.

The ‘Hawks finally closed the door on the inning when Dan Murdoch came on in relief and recorded two outs on eight pitches. But a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth gave the Wreckers a 6-4 lead and had the locals on the ropes.

The ‘Hawks were not ready to give up, though. In the top of the seventh, McGrath lashed a one-out single, stole second, and scored on a two-out double by Marks. After Oggeri walked, Shimko reached on an infield single to load the bases. But the Wreckers quelled the comeback attempt when Brian Cullinan flew out to end the game.

The locals wasted little time, though, getting back to work. The next day, they pounded New Fairfield, 16-3, as Joe DeVellis, Shimko and Marks fueled a 13-hit attack by banging out two hits apiece. Marks and McGrath both doubled and combined to drive in seven runs. Tony Galluci drove in two runs and Shimko scored four times.

But on Monday, the ‘Hawks fell again – this time to Bethel, 2-1, as Josh Vaghi and Marks locked up in a pitcher’s duel. Marks – who fired a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 5-0 win over Notre Dame last week – scattered eight hits in another complete-game effort, but Vaghi scattered only five hits to record the win.

Newtown took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when McGrath tripled and scored on a passed ball. Bethel tied it up in the fourth when Adam Pratt doubled and scored on a single by Jim Kapp (2-for-3 on the day).

The Wildcats took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with the aid of an error and three consecutive singles.

The locals were slated to take on Immaculate Wednesday in Danbury and will host New Milford on Friday and Wilton on Saturday before visiting Pomperaug and Bunnell on Monday and Wednesday.

GIRLS TRACK

5th at O’Grady Relays; Newtown 104, Brookfield 46; Newtown 140, Immaculate 9; Newtown 93, Masuk 57; Newtown 119, New Fairfield 31; Newtown 129, Notre Dame 21

With a tough test against Weston looming in a couple of weeks, the Newtown High School girls’ track team made short work of several South-West Conference opponents this past week and improved to 8-0.

The Lady Nighthawks swept Brookfield and Immaculate last Thursday before sweeping Masuk, New Fairfield and Notre Dame on Monday.

Against Brookfield and Immaculate, Alex Konneker was a triple winner after capturing the 100, 200 and 400 dashes as Sadie Ball was a double-winner with first-place finishes in the 800- and 1,600-meter races. Michelle Brennan captured the 3,200-meter run and Kayla Mesko won the pole vault.

The ‘Hawks also captured all three relays.

Against Masuk, New Fairfield and Notre Dame on Monday, Konneker reprised her triple-win effort of four days before while Brennan followed with another win in the 3,200 meters and Mesko followed with a win in the pole vault. Jess Cosgrove won the discus with a toss of 90-91/2.

The locals were bested in the 4x800 relay, but captured both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay events.

At the O’Grady Relays over the weekend, the ‘Hawks finished fifth with 56 points, just behind fourth-place Weston which earned 65 points.

On the track, the 4x800 relay team was fourth at 10:31.75, a little over 33 seconds behind of front-running Weston, as Sadie Ball earned a first-place finish in the steeplechase at 8:11.13, slightly ahead of teammate Elise DeRoo, who came in at 8:12.01. In the field events, sprinter Alex Konneker tried her hand at the high jump and finished in a log-jam tie for fourth with a leap of 4-4.

The ‘Hawks will host Stratford, Lauralton Hall and New Milford next Monday and will conclude the regular season on May 15 against Weston and Bunnell in Weston.

SOFTBALL

Newtown 20, Notre Dame 0; Bethel 5, Newtown 1

To be sure, it was not a terribly compelling week for the Newtown High School softball team.

The Lady Nighthawks mercy-ruled Notre Dame, 20-0, last Thursday at McCarty Field in Fairfield and then came home on Monday where they suffered a 5-1 loss to Bethel to fall to 6-5 in the South-West Conference, 5-2 in the South-West Conference.

In the shellacking of the Lady Lancers, Lisa Alberico was 4-for-4 with three RBI as Jenna Van Waalwijk, Jaclyn Van Waalwijk, Jenna Legros, Annie Grills and Ashley Ferris collected two hits apiece. Joanna Barry scored four runs as Ali Legros and Katie Schmidt both smashed triples to help fuel the offense.

On Monday, the ‘Hawks dug themselves a hole early by allowing three runs in the top of the first. The Lady Wildcats took advantage of a few pitches up in the zone and got their offense off to a quick start.

The ‘Hawks were scheduled to visit Immaculate on Wednesday and Kolbe Cathedral on Thursday and will return home on Friday for a game against New Milford under the lights at Treadwell Park. Next week, the locals will visit Pomperaug on Monday (at Community Field) and Bunnell on Wednesday.

BOYS TENNIS

Masuk 4, Newtown 3; Newtown 4, New Milford 3; Newtown 6, Notre Dame 1; Brookfield 5, Newtown 2

As post-season hopes seemed to be slipping through its fingers, the Newtown High School boys’ tennis team this week tried to hang on for dear life.

After suffering a 4-3 loss to Masuk last week, the Nighthawks earned a pair of wins against New Milford (4-3) and Notre Dame of Fairfield (6-1) to keep their South-West Conference playoff hopes alive heading into a Monday match with arch-rival Brookfield.

The ‘Hawks have had their hopes dashed by the Bobcats before and Monday was no different. The ‘Hawks dropped to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the SWC with a 5-2 loss to the ‘Cats on a sunny – but blustery – afternoon.

“As with Masuk,” said head coach Marty Margulies, “this was an achingly close match that could have gone the other way.”

The ‘Hawks gave it everything they had with three different matches seeing a total of four tiebreaks. At No. 1 singles, Drew Adamek dropped a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 decision to Scott Seiffer and at No. 1 doubles, the tandem of Mike Coster and Jim Wilkins dropped a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 decision to Chris Turner and Jamie Levitt.

But the closest match of all was at No. 2 doubles where the Newtown freshman tandem of Adam Wenick and Evan Batzer out-lasted Tomas Wind and Seth Steinberg in a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) marathon.

Coach Margulies remained upbeat.

“The loss effectively puts us out of the SWC post-season team playoffs,” he said, “but we still have the opportunity to send players to the SWC post-season individual tournament and if we can maintain at least a .500 record, we can send a full team to the state tournament in June.”

Last week the ‘Hawks dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Masuk. At singles, Adamek and Mario Roehrs both picked up wins but only the No. 3 tandem of Justin Pacheco and Dave Wilkins was able to capture a doubles match.

“Mario Roehrs and the third doubles team deserve special credit for holding off challenges and winning tight matches,” said coach Margulies.

The ‘Hawks then had an equally close match with New Milford, but this time came out on top. Although Adamek couldn’t complete an upset bid in a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 loss to Vlad Podoprigora, others picked up the slack. Max Margulies and Roehrs recorded singles victories while the tandems of Coster/Wilkins and Wenick/Batzer notched doubles wins.

“Drew played the match of his life in extending and almost upsetting one of the strongest players in the conference,” said coach Margulies. “It was among the most exciting and best-played contests I have ever seen, at any level, as Drew consistently made seemingly impossible returns and comebacks until the very end.”

The ‘Hawks battled Immaculate on Wednesday and New Fairfield on Thursday – both away – and will host Stratford on Monday before hitting the road again for matches against Joel Barlow and Pomperaug next week.

BOYS LACROSSE

Amity 6, Newtown 3

The Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team may be turning the corner in its quest to find an identity and play as a team, but the going continues to be a little rough. Another solid performance last weekend at Amity-Woodbridge nevertheless ended in a loss for the Nighthawks, their sixth of the season against only two wins.

Despite being out-shot, 27-15, and losing the war of the ground balls (48-23), the Spartans came out on the high end of a 6-3 score.

I felt we really outplayed Amity,” said head coach Brian Micena. “This is the first time we have out-shot and out-groundballed another team in the same game.  Still, we are giving up good too many high percentage shots and not getting too many quality shots.”

The ‘Hawks were scheduled to visit a very good New Milford team on Thursday before hosting an always strong Conard team on Saturday night at Blue & Gold Stadium. The locals will host New Fairfield next Tuesday night, also at Blue & Gold, before visiting Pomperaug next Thursday (face-off at 7 pm).

GOLF

Newtown 158, Notre Dame 186; Newtown 159, Bunnell 174

Even though the Newtown High School golf team wasn’t challenged all that much this past week, it was still pretty sharp.

The Nighthawks improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in South-West Conference action with a 158-186 win over Notre Dame last week and a rain-dampened 159-174 win over Bunnell – both at the Newtown Country Club – on Tuesday.

In the win over Notre Dame, Steve Oberstadt fired a medal-earning round of 3-over 37 with Billy McCann chipping in with a 5-over 39. Matt Taylor and Pat Daly both recorded rounds of 7-over 41 on the narrow layout.

In the win over Bunnell, McCann and Daly dueled with Mike Gallo of Bunnell and all three fired medallist rounds of 5-over 39. For Newtown, Taylor added a 6-over 40 while senior co-captain Dave McLaughlin chipped in a 7-over 41. James McIntosh helped the Bulldogs with a 6-over 40, but the ‘Dogs suffered with some high scores on the back end.

The ‘Hawks visited Weston at Aspetuck Valley Country Club on Thursday and will visit Brookfield at Sunset Hills Golf Course on Monday before returning to the Newtown Country Club environs on Tuesday and Thursday to host Joel Barlow and Masuk.

BOYS TRACK

17th at O’Grady Relays

With a second-place finish in the distance medley – the best finish of the day – the Newtown High School boys’ track and field team took second at the annual O’Grady Relays last weekend.

Danbury cruised to the title with 112 points, followed by Jonathan Law with 74, Hyde Leadership with 72, Naugatuck with 66 and Pomperaug with 61.

The Nighthawks finished with 22 points.

A South-West Conference quad meet with New Fairfield, Notre Dame and Masuk – at Masuk – scheduled for Tuesday was postponed until Friday because of rain. The locals will bring a 3-2 record into the meet.
