Hips And Strokes On

The Bill At NM Hospital

New Milford — On Wednesday, May 10, at 6:45 pm, at New Milford Hospital, orthopedic surgeon John Mullen, MD, is scheduled to present a community health forum entitled “Minimally Invasive Treatment of Osteoarthritis for the Hip & Knee.”

About 30 million people in the United States suffer from osteoarthritis, a deterioration of cartilage in the joints. It is the most common joint disease, can be extremely painful and causes loss of function in the areas affected.

Focusing on the hip and knee joints, Dr Mullen will explain the minimally invasive surgical approach available at the hospital’s Joint Replacement Center. Smaller incisions, less pain, reduced blood loss, and an easier recovery is what patients can expect from this procedure.

In other news, New Milford Hospital will work in conjunction with the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, on an upcoming “StrokeAlert!” event on Tuesday, May 23, from 10 am to 1 pm, at the hospital. No appointment is necessary.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 163,538 deaths in 2001. About 700,000 Americans each year suffer a new or recurrent stroke. That means every 45 seconds, on average, someone in the United States has a stroke; and about every three minutes someone dies of a stroke.

That accounts for about 1 of every 15 deaths, the third leading cause of death behind diseases of the heart and cancer. And women account for more than 6 in 10 stroke fatalities.

Knowing risk factors and making lifestyle changes can drastically reduce the risk for stroke.

The public is invited to attend this free screening, in an effort to educate individuals about their personal scores and what actions should be followed.

Registration is required for this event. Both programs are free and open to the public. For more information or to register for the osteoarthritis health forum, call 860-350-7215.
