On May 6, Governor Ned Lamont ordered that all public schools in the State of Connecticut would remain closed for the remainder of the academic year, due to ongoing concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response, Newtown Superintendent of Schools Dr Lorrie Rodrigue provided the following statement:

“I know it is always a difficult decision for State leaders to cancel school. However, the Governor’s response will now allow for an informed, well-laid out re-entry plan in place prior to bringing our students and staff back together. Knowing the challenges of social distancing in our schools, we need to make certain that all of the necessary accommodations and precautionary measures are in place in order to keep everyone safe.

While remote learning continues to evolve through our Alternative Learning Plan, we also fully recognize the in-person classroom experiences students receive with teachers are irreplaceable. We commend our staff, leaders, and families for working together to support our students during this time, and look forward to the day we can all be together again.”
