NHS To Stage Black Box Rendition of ‘The Mystery Of Edwin Drood’

Cast members were continuing to practice on Tuesday, May 3, for Newtown High School’s upcoming Black Box Theater Production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which will be shown in the high school’s auditorium from May 12 to 15.

The production has a student director, NHS senior Brenna Calderara, and NHS Choral Director Jane Matson is directing the musical numbers. NHS senior Gabby Milano is the production’s stage manager.

“It’s just going to be fun,” said Ms Matson, “a night of mystery.”

The Mystery of Edwin Drood was named for its inspiration, the last known and unfinished work by Charles Dickens. Rupert Homes wrote the script for the play, and crafted the unwritten ending of the book and play to be finished by the audience members.

Ms Matson explained audience members attending the performances of NHS’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood will decide which characters will fall in love, how the plot’s mystery ends, and more. Once the audience decides, the cast members will perform the remainder of the play to the audience’s liking.

Tickets for the show are $10. The Mystery of Edwin Drood will be shown at 7:30 pm Thursday, May 12, Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14. The show will begin at 2 pm on Sunday, May 15, for its final staging.
