Despite some incorrect media reports about a town wide election that are generating confused calls to Newtown Registrars of Voters this morning, only the 1,311 residents of the Borough of Newtown are being called to the polls today.

Borough residents are being asked to endorse an unopposed slate of borough officials who govern the separately designated area around the center of town. Voting is being held in the Registrars Office inside the Newtown Municipal Center today until 8 pm. The polling location has been open since 6 am.

Democratic Registrar LeReine Frampton told The Bee that a television news outlet is reporting that town elections are being held today, which is not accurate. Local elections for the entire community will be held in November, and there have been no declared candidates for town wide offices announced yet by local Republicans, Democrats or Independents.

The unopposed borough slate includes Warden James Gaston, Sr, who is running for his fourth two-year term.

Among other unopposed candidates are: Burgesses Joan Crick, Betsy Kenyon and Kim D'Amico; Clerk Ann LoBosco-Benore; Treasurer Catherine Monckton; and Tax Collector Jodie Enriquez. Also for Board of Assessment Appeals, John Madzula and Janet Woycik; Brid Craddock and Lucy Sullivan for Zoning Commission; and John Madzula and Katherine Geckle for Zoning Board of Appeals.

Ms Frampton said the typical tunout for the borough election is approximately 50. This markes the second time the borough elections are being held in the Municipal Center at Fairfield Hills with registrars staff handling some of the polling responsibilities instead of per diem workers using a separate location, saving approximately $3,000.
