Tennis Teams Post Victories

Newtown High School's girls' tennis team has won four straight matches, and the boys' squad has won two in a row.

The girls blanked visiting Bethel 7-0 on April 28 and posted a 7-0 triumph over visiting New Milford on May 5. On the boys' courts, Newtown posted a 7-0 triumph over visiting Stratford on April 27 and earned a 5-2 victory at New Milford on May 5.

In the Bethel match, top singles player Lauren Beier beat Ariana Leggio 6-2, 6-1, No. 2 player Amanda Berry bested Pavitra Makarla 6-0, 6-0, No. 3 player Anna Biondi defeated Isabela Oprea 6-1, 6-0, and No. 4 player Megan Cooney beat Jasmine Concalo 1-6, 6-2, 6-0. In doubles play, Emily McCoy and Julia Anderson came out on top 6-4, 5-7, 6-4; Tessa Leon-Gambetta and Sophie Wolfman won 6-1, 6-1; and Anika Dholakia and Gabby Reisert came back to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Against New Milford, Beier posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Alyssa Svinte, Berry topped Shannon Jugler 6-0, 6-1, Biondi defeated Emma Caifero 6-2, 6-3, and Cooney bested Lilly Neils 6-0, 6-1. In doubles play, McCoy and Anderson and Leon-Gambetta both won in two sets, and the third duo of Simran Chand and Reisert prevailed over Aunalise Anderson and Isabella Salazar 5-7, 6-1, 11-9.

In the boys' team win over Stratford, Joey Conrod won his match 6-0, 6-3, Matt Carino won 6-0, 6-1, Grant Larson came out on top 6-1, 6-1, and Jackson Dooley won 6-0, 6-2 in first through fourth singles, respectively. In doubles play, the top tandem of James Frazzeta and Justin Oelberg won 6-1, 6-2, the No. 2 team of Constantine Vogiatzis and Jordan Klein won 6-2, 6-1, and the No. 3 duo of Sean Bollman and Matt Frazzetta came on top 6-1, 6-0.

Against New Milford, Carino won a three-set match over Nick Adamou 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 at second singles, and Jackson Dooley beat Jacob O'Brien 6-4, 6-4 at fourth singles. The top doubles tandem of Oelberg and James Frazzetta won 6-3, 6-3, the No, 3 doubles team of Vogiatzis and Klein won 6-3, 6-3, and the No. 3 tandem of Matt Frazzetta and Peter Winans won 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.
