Newtown High School’s baseball team visited Brookfield on May 3 and handed the Bobcats only their second loss with a 6-2 victory. Jake Hossler pitched a complete game four-hitter, walking two and striking out eight. Ryan Verdi had three hits, including a double and homer, knocked in two runs, and scored a run. Matt Pietrorazio had a hit, walk, two runs batted in, and run scored. Josh Rosen singled, drove in a run, and scored. Sam D’Aprile walked and scored. Hayden Conklin had two hits and an RBI. The Nighthawks fell behind 2-0 after two innings and put up all of their runs in the fourth inning.

The line scores were loaded with crooked numbers when the Nighthawks visited Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on April 27, and again in a home contest with Immaculate of Danbury two days later — both instances of the good, the bad, and the ugly depending on which side players were on.

It was good but yet a bit messy for Newtown in a 26-3 win over Kolbe. The Nighthawks banged out 19 hits. The teams combined for a dozen errors, seven by Kolbe, in this five-inning, mercy-rule triumph. Kolbe managed just one hit as four Nighthawk hurlers combined to strike out seven.

Charlie Curtis homered and tripled, Pietrorazio and Verdi also tripled, and D’Aprile and Flynn Geissler both doubled. Nighthawk batters drove in 24 runs led by six off the bat of Curtis. D’Aprile had three RBI, and Mitchell Schrader, Evan Nikolis, and Yarema Stasyshyn all knocked in a pair. All told, 14 Nighthawks knocked in at least one run, and 14 runs were unearned.

Josh Rosen had a hit, RBI, and two runs scored; Alex Schmidt had two hits, an RBI, and run; Pietrorazio had two hits, an RBI, and three runs; Reid Burns had an RBI and run scored; Curtis went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to go along with his half-dozen batted in. Chad Argraves logged a hit, RBI, and two runs scored; Verdi had two hits, an RBI, and two runs; Logan Akbas delivered a hit, RBI, and two runs; Geissler had two hits, an RBI, and three runs scored; Kyle Turk had a hit, RBI, and run; Schrader and D’Aprile both scored twice; Nikolis had a run; and Stasyshyn had a hit and two runs scored.

Against Immaculate, Newtown finished with just one less hit than the Mustangs (11-10), but lost the game 14-6 as Immaculate did not commit an error and took advantage of six Newtown errors. Curtis homered again, Hayden Conklin and D’Aprile hit doubles, and Verdi and Pietrorazio tripled. Curtis, D’Aprile, and Nikolis each knocked in a pair of runs. Newtown led 4-1 after three innings of play but Immaculate struck with four in the fourth and five more in the fifth to seize control. Newtown starting pitcher Will Burns went 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, walking one, and striking out eight; he surrendered just two earned runs, but fielding miscues led to six unearned during his time on the mound. Newtown allowed eight unearned runs in the game.
