Failure To Obey Stop Sign

Newtown Police report Steven D’Amico, 58, of Danbury, operating a 2023 Nissan Frontier, was traveling on Church Hill Road at 8:11 pm April 13. Fernando Azancoth, 53, of Ansonia, operating a 2014 Honda CR-V, was traveling on Main Street. D’Amico left Church Hill Road and struck Azancoth’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Azancoth’s vehicle was towed.

D’Amico was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Hit Parked Car

Newtown Police report Dominick Hampton, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Ford F150, was attempting to park in a private parking lot behind 5 Queen Street at 3:11 pm April 22. In an adjacent spot was a parked, unoccupied 2024 Tesla Model Y owned by Robert Soltis of Newtown. The rear left corner of Hampton’s vehicle struck the left front corner of Soltis’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Both Operators Charged

Newtown Police report Maira Ridolfi, 43, of Redding, operating a 2022 Ford Mustang, was stopped in the northbound travel lane of Poverty Hollow Road at the intersection with Hattertown Road at 8:54 am April 23.

Douglas Graves, 37, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Mazda 3, was stopped in the eastbound travel lane of Hattertown Road at the intersection with Poverty Hollow Road. Graves drove into the intersection, and then Ridolfi entered the intersection, hitting the right side of Graves’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Graves’ vehicle was towed.

Ridolfi was issued an infraction for failure to stop and remain stopped at a stop sign until safe to proceed. Graves was issued an infraction for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Restricted Turn

Newtown Police report Donald Arasimowicz, 52, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS, was traveling north on Queen Street at 3:55 pm April 24. John Crouch, 75, of Sandy Hook, operating a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan, was also traveling northbound on Queen Street. Arasimowicz attempted to switch lanes, striking Crouch’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Arasimowicz received a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Disputed Green Light

Newtown Police report Madison Ziperstein, 22, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2020 Chevrolet Trax, was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road at 5:26 pm April 24. Marcio Valente, 50, of Bridgeport, operating a 2013 Ram Truck 1500 was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way. The two vehicles collided in the intersection of the two roads.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken as there were no witnesses as to which operator had a green light at the time of the collision.

Four Car Collision

Newtown Police report Austin Kasbarian, 25, of Sandy Hook, operating a 1997 Dodge Ram was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 4:50 pm April 27. He was behind a Nissan Rogue operated by Ashley Daston, 39, of Trumbull, which had stopped behind a 2010 Chrysler Town Car operated by Drew Cioffi, 38, of Danbury, which in turn was stopped behind a 2011 Chrysler Town & Country operated by Carmen Cordova, 31, of New Fairfield. Cordova attempted to make a right turn into a driveway. Kasbaraian did not stop in time, striking Daston’s vehicle, which was pushed into Cioffi’s vehicle, which in turn was pushed into Cordova’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Daston’s vehicle was towed.

Kasbarian was issued a written warning for following too close.

Hit And Run

Newtown Police report that an unidentified vehicle struck a parked 2021 Toyota Sienna owned by Craig Schwegel of Trumbull in the parking lot of 197 Huntingtown Road sometime before 2 pm April 28. There were no witnesses and no security cameras in the area where the incident occurred.

If located, the unknown driver will be charged with evading responsibility.

Failure To Maintain Lane

CT State Police report Angelo Jones, 31, of Atlanta, Ga., was operating a 2015 Kenworth tractor-trailer truck in the right lane of two on I-84 East near the Exit 11 off-ramp around 6:10 pm Sunday, April 28.

The truck was cut off by a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES being operated by Claudia S. Griffin, 71, of Milford, which had entered the right lane from the traffic gore. The tractor trailer was forced to go to the left, into the traffic gore, to avoid hitting the Mitsubishi from behind. The passenger side mirror of the Mitsubishi made contact with the trailer portion of the truck.

No injuries were reported to either driver or a passenger in the Mitsubishi.

Griffin was issued a written warning for failure to maintain lane.

Collision At Intersection

Newtown Police report Adela Todd, 70, of Newtown, operating a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt, was stopped at the stop sign on Madison Drive at Sugar Street at 5:45 pm April 30.

Heidi Kazmekas, 55, of Wolcott, operating a 2016 Lexus ES, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street. Todd failed to yield the right of way to Kazmekas, and attempted a left turn onto Sugar Street. The two vehicles collided.

No injuries were reported. Todd’s vehicle was towed.

Todd was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Mailbox Struck

Newtown Police report that an unknown driver struck a mailbox on Webster Place on April 30. A black plastic piece located near the incident indicates the vehicle may have been a Ford.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Officer Facto at 203-426-5841.

CT State Police report a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited being operated by Harold D. Maney, 78, of Ridgefield, was traveling in the high speed lane of I-84 East near Exit 11 around 5:30 pm Sunday, April 28, when the vehicle was struck from behind by a 2003 Honda CR-V EX. The Honda was being operated by Oswaldo O. Illescas, 23, of Southbury, who told CSP troopers he had attempted to swerve left in order to avoid a rear-end collision. The Honda rolled completely over, coming to rest perpendicular to the western shoulder of the interstate. Maney was able to pull the Jeep safely into the median before stopping. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the crash. Both drivers and a passenger in the Jeep were all checked for injuries; no one was transported to the hospital. Illescas was issued a citation for following too close and operating without a license. —Bee Photo, Hicks
