Alfred H.         Jurgens, Jr

Alfred H. Jurgens, Jr, 75, of Pine Street, Oxford, the beloved husband of Helen (Lewis) Jurgens for 51 years, died peacefully at home May 4 after a short illness, with his family present.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and James Shpunt of Sandy Hook.

Mr Jurgens was born in Brooklyn on July 27, 1925, beloved son of the late Alfred H. Jurgens, Sr, and Cornelia (Delpho) Jurgens. He retired in 1990 as a foreman with Bridgeport Machines Company in Bridgeport after 37 years of employment. After retiring, he was a Town of Oxford Seniors bus driver for ten years.

He served in the US Marine Corps during World War II and saw action in the Asiatic Theatre Campaigns of Bougainville, Guam, Iwo Jima, and the North Solomons. Mr Jurgens was a member of Newtown Congregational Church and a past member of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company and Newtown Ambulance Association. He had resided in Oxford for 23 years and previously lived in Sandy Hook. Mr Jurgens was an avid RV traveler and traveled extensively in the United States and Canada.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr Jurgens is survived by a son, Clayton H. Jurgens, and his wife, Marie, of Seymour; four grandchildren, Jamie and Jessica Shpunt and Jason and Maria Jurgens; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Doris Baas.

A memorial service was held on May 7 at United Church of Christ, Southbury, 283 Main Street North, Southbury, with the Reverend Walter Pitman, pastor, officiating. Military Honors were accorded on May 6 at the funeral home. Interment was at the convenience of the family.
