On Hubble Space Telescope

BROOKFIELD — Linda Abramowicz-Reed, a space telescope systems engineer for Goodrich Corporation of Danbury (formerly Perkin-Elmer), will present a lecture and slide show entitled “Hubble Space Telescope – From Earthly Beginnings through 14 Years in Space” at Brookfield Historical Society on Sunday, May 16.

Her presentation will begin at 2 pm. Admission is free.

The presentation is being sponsored by Brookfield Historical Society and will take place at its museum, at the intersection of routes 25 and 133 in Brookfield Center.

Ms Reed, a Newtown resident, has over 20 years of experience on the Hubble Space Telescope program and played an integral part in the development of the telescope and its fine guidance system. Her presentation will cover a wide range of topics starting with the advantages of a space-based telescope.

In addition, an overview of how Hubble works and design features that make it serviceable with astronauts and the space shuttle will be explored. Highlighting the presentation will be slides featuring Hubble’s great astronomical discoveries from early star formations to violent explosions of dying stars and the most recent scene of the early universe shortly after the Big Bang. Finally, the ultimate fate of Hubble’s current condition, along with information on other great observatories operating in space, will also be touched upon.

A model of the space telescope will be on exhibit during the lecture.
