Charles Merten

Former Associate Professor At Cornell Medical College

Charles Merten, 85, of Southbury, died April 27, at Danbury Hospital, with his family at his side. He was born in Augusta, Kan., July 22, 1924, the son of Matthew and Anna Hawes Merten. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Margaret E. Merten.

He is survived by his daughter Carol Upshur and her husband, Arthur, of Newtown; sons Bill and wife, Lauren, of New York City and Tom and wife, Sandy, of Scotia, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

During World War II he received his medical training through the US Army, graduating from Harvard Medical School. He served in the Air Force occupational forces in Japan during the Korean War. He was a radiologist at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., and associate professor of clinical radiology at Cornell Medical College. After 30 years he retired and moved to Stowe, Vt., where he was the radiologist for the local clinic. He moved to Southbury in 2008.

Dr Merten enjoyed his free time in his vegetable garden, skiing, sailing, playing tennis, and camping. He had a lifelong passion for the study of history and knowledge of the human condition.
