Two of the more unusual games Newtown High School’s softball team has had came in back-to-back road outings — a 3-1 victory over Bunnell of Stratford on May 2 and a 25-0 thumping of Immaculate of Danbury in a makeup game the next day.

The dozen-plus-baker’s-dozen total against Immaculate speaks for itself, although hidden in that offensive, football-like score outburst is that everybody — starters, reserves, even pitchers — all 13 players, had at least one base hit in a 26-hit attack.

So what’s so unusual about a 3-1 victory?

Newtown was held hitless until the seventh inning before rallying to pull out a tough victory at Bunnell.

The Nighthawks fell to visiting Masuk of Monroe 8-0 on May 5, but bounced back with a 15-2 win over host New Fairfield the next day. The Hawks carried a 7-6 overall record (5-3 in the South-West Conference) into the second week of May.

Kate Laaksonen drove in a run on a groundout and the Hawks and Bunnell Bulldogs were even at a run apiece heading into Newtown’s final at bat. With one out, Emily Woznick broke up the no hitter with a triple. With two outs, Dani Shine drove in Woznick with a go-ahead single. Shine stole second and scored on a single by Mali Klorczyk to give NHS a two-run edge.

Pitcher Gillian Galante started and tossed four hitless, scoreless innings, and Lauren Wilcox allowed a run on one hit in her three frames. Galante struck out three batters and Wilcox fanned six.

Against Immaculate, a game ended after five innings because of the mercy rule, Shine had four hits and drove in three, Mikayla Kuligowski had three hits and also knocked in three, and Woznick added three hits and a run batted in.

Megan Goyda had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in, and Jill Lasorsa and Karlie Kuligowski both had two hits and two RBI as well. Haley Ryan, Wilcox, and Kayla O’Grady all added a pair of hits. Newtown slugged out seven doubles in the triumph.

In the loss to Masuk, Laaksonen, and Lasorsa each had two hits and Klorczyk added a hit.

Newtown dominated New Fairfield as Mikayla Kuligowski had a 6-for-6 performance with five runs batted in and a run scored. Lasorsa had two hits, four RBI, and two runs scored; Shine had three hits, an RBI, and scored three runs; and Klorczyk had a hit and two driven in.

Galante allowed five hits and five walks, and struck out nine batters in the win over the Rebels.

Newtown will host Stratford at Treadwell Park on Friday, May 9 at 7 pm.
