Verbal Warnings

Newtown police report a 2016 BMW 320i being operated by Kyle Shelton, 19, of Shelton, was traveling southbound on Queen Street around 12:38 pm, Tuesday, April 27, behind a 2012 Subaru Forester 2.5x Premium being operated by Alice Brescia, 78, of New Fairfield, in heavy stop and go traffic.

The Subaru attempted to turn right into the parking lot of 6 Queen Street as the BMW also attempted to turn right into the same parking lot.

The Subaru’s right side struck the left front bumper of the BMW in the process.

No injuries were reported to either driver, nor a passenger in each vehicle; all were wearing seat belts.

Shelton was given a verbal warning for passing on right.

Brescia was given a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

Restricted Turn, Damaged Lawn

Newtown police report that Elizabeth T. Cassetta, 18, of Sandy Hook, was operating a 2013 Ford Explorer Limited northbound on South Main Street, near Hawley Road, around 12:46 pm, Tuesday, April 27.

At the same time, a 2006 Audi A4 2.0 Quattro AWD being operated by Nicholas A. Mullings, 21, of Yonkers, N.Y., was traveling southbound on South Main Street.

Cassetta started to make a left turn toward Hawley Road, in front of the Audi. Mullings swerved to the left to avoid the Ford, when the right front side on the Ford made contact with the right front side of the Audi.

The Audi continued to travel across the northbound lane, then the northbound shoulder, before coming to rest on the front lawn of 21 South Main Street. The Audi struck the northbound curbing and dug up the lawn on 21 South Main Street, which is on the corner of Hawley Lane.

At the time of the accident, the Audi had the right of way, according to the police report.

Hook & Ladder firefighters and a crew from Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene. Mullings reported foot pain, and a female passenger with him reported arm and back pain. Both were transported to the hospital.

No other injuries were reported by Cassetta or her two passengers. All five people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

Cassetta was issued an infraction for restricted turn.

Found Property

On Tuesday, April 27, around 1:48 pm, a round earring with clear stones was found in the area of 146 South Main Street.

Failure To Grant Right Of Way

Newtown police report a 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 being operated by Scott L. Demuth, 62, of Danbury, was traveling east on Dodgingtown Road (Route 302), passing through the intersection of Hattertown Road, around 3:20 pm, Tuesday, April 27.

While passing through the intersection, the Mercedes was hit by a 2020 Ford truck (no model given) registered to Sirius Raw Dog Food Company, being operated by Thomas J. Long, 65, of Katrine, N.Y.

The truck was traveling west on Hattertown, and turning left onto Dodgingtown Road, when it struck the passenger side of the Mercedes.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. There were no injuries reported.

Long was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at intersection.

Verbal Warning

Newtown police report a 2009 Acura MDX being operated by Renee M. Dackow, 20, of Brookfield, was traveling east on Sugar Street around 4:06 pm, Tuesday, April 27, behind a 2020 Mercedes C 300, which was being operated by Michele Maier, 54, of Bethel.

Maier stopped the Mercedes, but Dackow did not stop and the Acura struck the rear of the Mercedes, leaving an impression of its front registration plate in the Mercedes’ rear bumper.

No injuries were reported to either driver. Both were wearing seat belts.

Dackow received a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

DUI, Failure To Drive Right

On Tuesday, April 27, around 8:23 pm, Newtown police officers responded to the area of South Main Street near Lovells Lane following a report of the erratic operation of a vehicle.

The vehicle in question was located and stopped after it crossed the double yellow center lines.

After an investigation, Veronica M. Plesz, 37, of Trumbull, was arrested for driving under the influence and failure to drive right.

Plesz was issued a summons for a court date of May 12 and was released after posting a $100 bond.

Failure To Drive In Proper Lane

Nathaniel C. Pellicone, 21, of Monroe, went to Newtown Police Department to report an accident that had occurred around 1:16 pm, Thursday, April 29.

Pellicone reported that he had been traveling south on South Main Street near Buttonshop Road approximately 20 minutes earlier. Pellicone was in the right lane, he reported. A second vehicle, later determined to be a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Petroslav T. Stanev, was also traveling south on South Main Street, in the left lane. The Silverado then moved into the right lane.

To avoid contact with the truck, Pellicone swerved to the right. In doing so, he hit the curbing on the right/western side of the roadway.

There were no injuries. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

After being interviewed by Newtown police, Stanev was given a verbal warning for failure to drive in proper lane.

Paramedic Vehicle Struck

Paramedic Justin Walsh, 44, of Woodbury, was responding to an emergency call around 2:15 pm, Friday, April 30, when the vehicle he was in was struck by a passenger vehicle.

Walsh continued to the scene of the medical emergency, but then returned to the police department following the call.

Walsh told police he had been traveling westbound on Botsford Hill Road, approaching the intersection with South Main Street. Walsh was operating a 2020 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor registered to Western Connecticut Health Network, with its emergency overhead lights and siren activated.

When Walsh got to the intersection, he stopped and ensured that vehicles on South Main Street had stopped to allow him to proceed into the intersection. The Ford entered the intersection and was turning left across the front of a northbound box truck, when an unknown passenger vehicle, also traveling northbound on South Main Street, passed the box truck on its driver’s side. The unknown vehicle crossed into the southbound lane to do so.

Walsh was wearing his seat belt at the time. He was uninjured, according to the police report.

The unknown vehicle made contact with the passenger side front bumper of the Ford, causing minor but discernible damage.

Walsh pulled to the shoulder of South Main Street and watched as the vehicle that struck the Ford continued northbound without stopping. Walsh radioed dispatch of the incident before continuing to the medical scene.

As of May 3, the owner/operator of the unknown vehicle had not contacted the police department. It was unknown what damage the evading vehicle would have.

DUI Arrest

Newtown police were sent to the area of Mt Pleasant Road and Hawleyville Road around 4:10 pm, Sunday, May 2, for a health and welfare check. A caller to dispatch reported a female in a vehicle who was disoriented and possibly having a medical issue. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene.

Upon investigation, officers determined the woman, Denita Sherman, 44, of Danbury, was impaired by drugs.

Sherman was arrested and charged with one count of DUI/illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Sherman was released on a $100 cash bond and issued a court date of May 11.
