Newtown High – It’s Getting Down To Crunch Time

Kim J. Harmon

This is it – crunch time. With the 2005 regular season winding down (already?), it has become a matter of playoff positioning. With the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team fighting for a trip to the South-West Conference Division I championship game and the golf team fighting for a team to the SWC team tournament, the baseball and softball teams are looking to better their lots for their upcoming tournaments.

A lot is going to be decided in the next week or so.

Stay tuned.

GIRLS LACROSSE

New Fairfield 8, Newtown 7

A little help?

If the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team is going to secure a spot in the South-West Conference Division I championship game (against either Masuk or Joel Barlow) it is going to need a little help after dropping an 8-7 decision to New Fairfield on Tuesday night.

With Newtown, Masuk and Joel Barlow each finishing 1-1 in Division I play, records against the top-ranked teams in Division II would serve as a tiebreaker. With New Fairfield ranked as the No. 1 team in Division II, a Newtown win would have guaranteed the Lady Nighthawks a trip to the D-I finals.

The ‘Hawks had that guarantee within their sight, but with only 16.3 seconds left to play in the second half, Alyse Valentini of New Fairfield made a beautiful dodge into the fan and shoveled a backhanded shot past goaltender Kerrie Canavan to snap a 7-7 tie and send the Lady Rebels on to the win.

It was a game of runs.

The Lady Rebels opened with three goals inside the first six minutes, but the ‘Hawks recovered and scored four unanswered goals – off the sticks of Karli Beitel, Jen Greenwood, Casey Frobey and Kate Sudby – in the next 11 minutes to take a 4-3 lead. But the Lady Rebels responded to that by scoring three straight goals to close out the first half with a 6-4 advantage.

Rachel Maley opened the second half with a goal at 18:26, but the Lady Rebels responded seconds later to remain on top by a pair, 7-5. Five minutes later, though, Beitel – with a nifty move, switching stick hands – scored to move the ‘Hawks to within one.

The visitors had a chance to expand their lead, but Canavan and Carly Curran made two spectacular defensive plays to keep that from happening – Canavan covering an open net and intercepting a sure goal and Curran racing back to stop a one-on-one fastbreak.

Beitel scored her third goal of the game at 8:28 off an assist from Casey Frobey to tie the score and the ‘Hawks seemed to have all the momentum after that. But the locals were unable to break through a strong New Fairfield defense for the game-winner.

The loss dropped them to 7-4 overall.

Things were much easier last week when the ‘Hawks hammered New Milford, 14-5. Beitel scored six goals and assisted on two others while Frobey scored three goals and Moira Collier added two. Rachel Maley, Kim Solheim and Kate Sudby scored solo goals as Sudby and Frobey both notched assists.

The ‘Hawks visited Pomperaug on Thursday and will visit Brookfield next Tuesday before returning home the following Thursday to host Notre Dame.

On the sub varsity level –

Courtney Gleason scored three goals and Lisa Isabella made five saves in the cage as the junior varsity team tied New Milford, 6-6, last week. Hannah Tenenbaum, Stephanie Soder and Lauren Clark all scored solo goals to help power the offense.

GIRLS TENNIS

Now that the warm weather is finally here to stay, what is that going to mean for the Newtown High School girls’ tennis team?

“We have been hoping the nice warm tennis weather will arrive soon,” said head coach Maureen Maher, “but the girls seem to be playing well in the cold.”

The Lady Nighthawks improved to 11-0 with wins over Brookfield (6-1) and Stratford (7-0).

The match against Brookfield was halted back on May 2 shortly after it started and play resumed on Friday with only a slight improvement in the weather. But that made no difference to the ‘Hawks as Lauren Nemeth, Michelle Serock and Sarah Salbu recorded singles wins and the duos of Jill Tanner/Emily Fields, Kristene Salbu/Ashley Gabor and Veronica Parsloe/Maxx Zimmer recorded doubles wins.

“Our first and second singles had tough matches,” said coach Maher. “Brookfield’s No. 1 and No. 2 players have gotten much stronger as the season has gone on.”

It was the freshman tandem of Parsloe and Zimmer which helped put a smile on coach Maher’s face as they secured an easy 6-3, 6-0 win over Anna Jaffe and Lauren Cadena.

The locals sailed through a 7-0 win over Stratford on Monday afternoon, losing just six games out of the 90 played. Nemeth, Tara Ryan, Serock and Parsloe recorded straight set singles wins while the duos of Tanner/Fields, Gabor/Kristene Salbu and Lauren DeFelice/Christina Elsenhans recorded straight set sweeps.

The locals faced their toughest opponent of the season – Joel Barlow – on Wednesday and visited Pomperaug on Thursday. Home matches against Lauralton Hall on Monday and Weston next Wednesday will conclude the regular season.

BASEBALL

While winning three in a row and five of their last six, the Newtown High School baseball team was on cruise control on their trip to the South-West Conference and CIAC state tournaments.

But the bus hit a speed bump last Friday in New Milford.

With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Green Wave exploded for six runs to take a 9-3 lead. The Nighthawks rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh, but it was too little too late and the locals dropped to 9-5 overall, 4-3 in the SWC.

The locals scored first in the top of the second and then added two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. The Green Wave plated a run in the bottom of the fifth off Mike Tibbetts to tie the score.

Tibbetts had come on in relief in the fourth inning for starter Steve Marks, who went only three.

Steve Vichiola singled, doubled and drove in a run while Tom Gaboriault singled twice and drove in two runs. Joe DeVellis had a pair of hits while Brian Shimko tripled and Ryan McGrath and Pete Oggeri drove in runs.

Oggeri had a titanic shot to centerfield in this game that would have been a homer in any park with a fence, only it was a long out in New Milford.

The ‘Hawks were coming off a tight, 6-5 win over Immaculate two days before that saw Marks earn his second save of the season.

Marks came on in the top of the seventh after Dave Simone of Immaculate belted a two-run homer off Alex Dolan to pull the Mustangs to within one run. But Marks nailed down the final three outs for the win.

McGrath doubled and drove in a pair of runs while Seth Hull doubled and drove in a run. Tibbetts, Vichiola and Joe DeVellis all drove in runs.

The ‘Hawks hosted Bunnell on Wednesday and will be in Redding on Friday to take on Joel Barlow.

On Saturday, the ‘Hawks will hit the road and play Pomperaug at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York. The teams will stay overnight and visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday before returning home.

SOFTBALL

Even while in the midst of an incredibly dominating seven-game winning streak, head coach Jay Edwards knew the toughest tests were still to come.

While reeling off seven straight wins, the Newtown High School softball team outscored its opponents 78-2. But everyone – from coach Edwards right down to the last person on the bench – knew it wouldn’t be that easy in New Milford last week.

And it wasn’t.

With Lisa Morgan firing a one-hitter and striking out 10, the Lady Nighthawks earned a 1-0 win over a Green Wave team that had been undefeated in the South-West Conference. Morgan drove in the only run in the top of the second inning with a long double, plating Jenna Van Waalwijk who had reached on a single.

Eight wins in a row is eight wins in a row, but the win over New Milford was the biggest.

“We knew Wille (Parson) was a good pitcher and we really prepared for this,” said Van Waalwijk, who was batting .257 through that game. “We were ready. This is a big win for us and it will help us in our bigger games coming up.”

As dominating as Morgan was (in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on third, Morgan came up with two huge strikeouts), the story in this one may have been the defense: rightfielder Annie Grills made a running stab of a hard smash in the bottom of the first inning and in the bottom of the fourth Sam Ciaccia threw home on an infield grounder to cut down the potential tying run.

With the win, the locals improved to 10-4 overall and 8-0 in the SWC. But on Monday, the ‘Hawks fell from the ranks of the conference unbeaten with a 2-0 loss to Pomperaug under the lights at Treadwell Park.

The Lady Panthers scored twice in the top of the third with the benefit of an infield hit, passed ball and two errors. The ‘Hawks challenged in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on second and third with one out – but Paige Hackett shut the door by striking out Van Waalwijk and inducing Morgan to pop up.

The ‘Hawks had five hits in the contest, one of those a double off the bat of Van Waalwijk.

Morgan scattered four hits and struck out 11, but was saddled with the hard-luck loss.

The locals hosted Bunnell on Wednesday night at Treadwell Park and will visit Lauralton Hall on Friday before visiting Brookfield next Monday and returning home next Wednesday to host Stratford for Senior Day.

The regular season will conclude next Thursday with a visit to Masuk.

NOTE: When Morgan whiffed Sarah Storck of New Milford in the bottom of the second last Friday, it was her 600th career strikeout. With 11 more strikeouts against Pomperaug on Monday, Morgan now has 619 for her career – 28 shy of the school record (647) held by Cathy Byrne.

BOYS TENNIS

Brookfield has been a thorn in the side of the Newtown High School boys’ tennis team for quite some time and was prickly again last week.

The Bobcats pinned a 6-1 loss on the surging Nighthawks (six straight wins after opening the season with three straight losses) last Friday and put a severe crimp in their hopes to qualify for the South-West Conference team tournament.

The match began on Monday, May 2, but was interrupted almost immediately by rain and resumed last Friday.

“The boys played well and were competitive in every match,” said head coach Marty Margulies. “Drew was spectacular against an opponent who was in many ways a carbon copy of himself – patient, poised, tireless and exceptionally steady – and their match, which Drew ultimately lost, was among the best high school matches I have ever seen. Each youngster repeatedly made unbelievably spectacular returns.”

Max Margulies recorded Newtown’s only win on the afternoon, a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Tomas Wind at No. 4 singles.

Despite the loss, the ‘Hawks are looking to finish strong, with a winning record, and to send as many players as possible to the SWC individual tournament.

“These are no small accomplishments,” said coach Margulies, “and would represent a very good performance for a young team that will have another year or more to improve and to jell.”

Adamek appears to have sewn up a position in the tournament, but Chris Martin (No. 2 singles), Chris Meier (No. 3 singles) and Max Margulies (No. 4) singles need to finish among the top five conference players at their position in order to qualify and currently are on the bubble … as are the Nighthawks’ No. 1 and No. 2 doubles tandems.

Matches against Joel Barlow (on Wednesday), Pomperaug (on Thursday) and Weston (next Wednesday) would make the determination.

This past week, the ‘Hawks cruised to easy wins over Immaculate (7-0), New Fairfield (6-1) and Stratford (7-0).

In the win over New Fairfield, the freshman doubles tandem of Mario Roehrs and Baj Ahtchi made a statement with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jeff and Brian D’Angelo. At No. 4 singles, Margulies continued to impress with a difficult win over Mansur Tauk.

And the No. 3 doubles tandem of Dave Wilkins and Ben Wicki showed a lot of poise in outlasting Andrew Kotilik and Greg Joram through a difficult 6-7 (7-4), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) match.

BOYS TRACK

Newtown 91, Bunnell 59; Newtown 82, Masuk 67; Newtown 98, Brookfield 52

Some expected the stiffest challenge on Monday afternoon to come from Bunnell, but Masuk provided that challenge for the Newtown High School boys’ track team.

Still, the Nighthawks accepted whatever challenges came their way and swept their way past Bunnell (91-59), Masuk (82-67) and Brookfield (98-52) to run their record to 8-1. A quad meet with New Fairfield, New Milford and Joel Barlow will close out the regular season next week.

On Monday, Marcus Tracy was a double winner in the 100- and 400-meter dashes and his time in the 400 (47.9) not only shattered the school record, it is currently the 18th best time registered in the country.

Charlie Baldour (1,600 and 3,200 meters) and Kevin Quinn (high jump) were individual winners while the 4x800 relay team of Scott Nichols, Matt Cole, Eric MacKnight and Pete Dittmar captured first by four seconds over Masuk.

Tyler von Oy (shot put), Jeff Lipnick (43.8) and Ryan Peters (javelin) all finished second for the ‘Hawks.

GIRLS TRACK

Newtown 110, Masuk 40; Newtown 96, Brookfield 54; Newtown 124, Bunnell 26

The accepted wisdom is that the South-West Conference championship is the Newtown High School girls’ track team’s to lose and nothing the Lady Nighthawks have done so far goes against that.

The ‘Hawks swept past Masuk (110-40), Brookfield (96-54) and Bunnell (124-26) to run their record to 10-0, but a stiff challenge awaits next week when the ‘Hawks square off against Joel Barlow, New Milford and New Fairfield to close out the regular season.

On Monday, Alex Konneker (100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes) was a triple winner and her 57.6 in the 400 re-set the school record.

Sadie Ball (800 and 1,600 meters) was a double winner while Caitlin Weber (high jump) and Siobhan Cooper (shot put) were individual winners.

The 4x800 relay of Darcy Fiscella, Whitney Allison, Kate Stickles and Remy Ball grabbed a first-place finish as did the 4x400 relay of Remy Ball, Sadie Ball, Ciara Simek and Alex Konneker.

Elise DeRoo (3,200 meters), Jess Cosgrove (discus), Leah Herity (pole vault), Weber (300 hurdles) and Remy Ball (800 meters) earned second-place finishes as did the 4x100 relay of Herity, Julie Landin, Quincey Blanchard and Simek.

BOYS LACROSSE

Joel Barlow 14, Newtown 3

The 2005 season has been no picnic for the Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team and this past week was particularly challenging.

Facing a couple of the toughest teams in the state, the Nighthawks dropped to 2-8 overall with losses to Joel Barlow (14-3) last Thursday and Conard of West Hartford (12-4) on Monday.

The game with Barlow was an ersatz preview of the South-West Conference Division I championship game since both teams – the only so-called D-I programs in the SWC – have already qualified. Brendan O’Connor scored a goal and assisted on the other two while Jeff Bell and Grant Speer notched solo goals.

Drew Harmata made 12 saves in the cage.

In the loss to Conard, Speer scored three times and Zach D’Agostino scored once. Harmata made 15 saves.

The locals were in Guilford on Thursday and will host Bethel at Blue & Gold Stadium on Saturday night (7 pm). Next Tuesday, the ‘Hawks will host Norwalk at Blue & Gold Stadium before hosting Brien McMahon on Thursday on the back fields.

Things were tenuous at best.

But the Newtown High School golf team saw its hopes of qualifying for the South-West Conference team tournament take a serious blow on Tuesday with a 177-177 match-of-cards loss to Joel Barlow at the Redding Country Club.

A tie is decided on a fifth-man match of cards and the Nighthawks – which got a strong 5-over par 41 from Dave McLaughlin – fell short. Matt Ward of Barlow turned in a 46 while Dave Freeston carded a 57.

The loss dropped the ‘Hawks to 4-7 overall, 3-3 in the SWC and it followed a solid 166-172 win last week over Brookfield at Sunset Hills. McLaughlin carded a 4-over par 39 (and earned medallist honors) while Matt Taylor and Billy McCann followed with rounds of 6-over par 41.

Jon Cain added a 10-over 45.

Last Thursday, the ‘Hawks played pretty well on their home tract at the Newtown Country Club but were overwhelmed by Weston, 141-166. While Cain fired a 6-over 39 and Kevin Troy added a 7-over 40, Kevin Kepesky of Weston shot an even par 33, Joe Fucigna added a 1-over 34, and Brendan Hylwa and Peter Scher contributed rounds of 4-over 37.

The locals were in Monroe on Thursday to take on Masuk and will be in Stratford on Monday to take on Bunnell. They will return home next Tuesday and Thursday to host Immaculate and Bethel.
