To The Editor:

May 17 through 23 is National EMS week, a perfect time to recognize the amazing group of volunteers that make up Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps (NVAC).

We have approximately 65 members who dedicate their time day in and day out, to ensure that the people of Newtown have top quality emergency medical care at a moment’s notice. The station is staffed with at least 2 EMTs and a medic at all times.

NVAC’s volunteers cover over 3000 emergency calls each year. Many times, there are two, three, or four calls happening simultaneously. Each of those times, our members selflessly rush to help our community, often leaving their families at the dinner table, missing their kids’ games, or delaying work tasks to ensure these calls are covered.

NVAC’s volunteers are made up of all ages, from high school students to retirees and every group in between. Some of these volunteers do work full-time in the healthcare industry, but there is also a wide variety of other professional backgrounds represented. NVAC volunteers have a long history supporting our town, with some individuals being involved for over 20 years. This group is very proud of the service that they provide, and many of these volunteers will say that they do not need to be celebrated for their efforts.

As the Chief, I want to say how proud I am of the members of Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and sincerely thank each of them for their dedication and commitment to the people of Newtown. I also want to extend a shout-out to the fire departments in town for the help and support that they provide on our emergency calls, many of their members are also EMTs.

Jenn Newsom, Chief

Newtown AMBULANCE Corps.
