Supporting The Budget

To The Editor:

I am writing with a couple of comments on the second referendum coming up on Tuesday May 19. First, we want to boost our turnout so hopefully everyone comes out to vote. And second, this is a responsible budget that I support.

This covers the Municipal and Education budgets, which both failed in the first referendum. In response to that clear message from the voters, both spending budgets have been reduced vs. the first vote, by a total of $871K.

The total amended tax rate increase — the impact to residents' wallets — will now be 1.96%, which is below the last two years' voter-approved increases, below inflation, below the latest Social Security benefit COLA, and below the currently proposed increases for 7 comparable nearby towns (that's Bethel, Brookfield, Monroe, Southbury, New Fairfield, Easton, and Oxford). Referendums are not final everywhere, but I don't find any local towns with a lower tax increase than ours.

Total town spending would be up 3.5%, which is also equal to or less than the proposed spending increase in all 7 of those other towns.

So this is a thoughtful budget that balances affordability with prudent investments in the town and our schools, to keep Newtown thriving. Again, I support a Yes vote to both budgets on the 19th.

These are my own views, not those of the Board of Finance of which I am chair.
