New York Man Steals Two Cars, Arrested After Police K9 Chase

A New York, NY man was arrested after allegedly being seen peering in a window of a Newtown residence and police discovering a stolen vehicle in the area.

Reynaldo Colon, a 21-year-old resident of New York, NY, was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal trespass, assault on public safety personnel, interfering with an officer, larceny of a motor vehicle, and cruelty to animals.

On the evening of May 18, the Newtown Police Department responded to a residence on Jeremiah Road for the report of a male party looking through the windows of the residence. As officers responded to the area, the man ran into the woods.

Officers were assisted in searching the area by the drone unit as well as multiple K9 units from area departments, including Connecticut State Police and Bethel Police. During this search, officers located a stolen motor vehicle parked in the area and were able to coordinate with New York State Police to obtain a possible identity of the suspect.

On May 19, at approximately 6:30 am, another resident in the area of Jeremiah Road observed this suspect walking in the area. Officers responded to that area, and multiple K9 units from surrounding departments responded to assist: Connecticut State Police, Monroe Police, Brookfield Police, and New Milford Police. At approximately 8 am hours, the suspect was taken into custody, placed under arrest, and transported to Danbury Hospital. Colon was apprehended with the assistance of the CSP K9 unit. As he was taken into custody, Police say Colon punched and kicked the police K9.

Over the past two days, Colon is suspected of stealing a vehicle in Sharon, and another in Monroe, NY.

This investigation and arrest were a significant coordinated effort that required the assistance of NY State Police, multiple Connecticut local and state police departments, the Newtown Emergency Communications Center, the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and local residents. Once again, our department received numerous phone calls and tips from the public that assisted in this investigation.

Colon remains in police custody and is scheduled for arraignment on May 20.
