Hit By Construction Material

Newtown Police report Eder DeOliveira, 37, of Danbury, operating a 2017 GMC Savana G2500, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road east of Pole Bridge Road at 2:51 pm April 28. Elizabeth Alberico, 24, of Winter Park, Fla., operating a 2017 Ford Fiesta, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road behind DeOliveira’s vehicle.

DeOliveira’s vehicle was carrying construction material outside of the vehicle and a strong gust of wind caused some materials to fall and struck the hood and roof of Alberico’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

DeOliveira was given a verbal warning for hauling an unsecured load.

Collision At Intersection

Newtown Police report Vincent Spina, 66, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Toyota Corolla, was traveling westbound on Currituck Road and approached the stop sign at the intersection with Main Street at 6:26 am May 6. Kevin Chandler, 35, of North Haven, was traveling northbound on Main Street. Police say Spina attempted to enter onto Main Street, and Chandler’s vehicle struck Spina’s vehicle.

Chandler was transported to Danbury Hospital for evaluation. Both vehicles sustained heavy front end damage and were towed.

Spina was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign. Chandler was issued a misdemeanor summons for operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license and was released on a written promise to appear with a court date of May 24 in Danbury Superior Court.

Hit Parked Truck

Newtown Police report Francisco Ruiz, 45, of Manchester, operating a 2020 Ford Transit, was traveling in the parking lot of 1 Berkshire Road at 9:56 am May 6. Ruiz attempted to pass a parked, unoccupied 2021 Ford F59 box truck that was located along the right side of the building at 1 Berkshire Road. As Ruiz drove past the vehicle, police say the right side of his vehicle collided with the left side of the unoccupied vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Struck Deer

Newtown Police report Erin Shah, 18, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Volvo S60 Cross Country, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street at 6:55 am May 9. The operator told police a deer entered the roadway from the westbound shoulder of the road, crossed the centerline and struck the front of Shah’s vehicle.

Shah was not injured. The vehicle was towed from the scene due to disabling damage.

No enforcement action was taken.

Unsafe Passing

Newtown Police report Peyton Goodrich, 22, of Thomaston, operating a 2013 Honda Accord, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 9:05 am May 9. Victoria Ford, 62, of Northfield, operating a 2017 Hyundai Tucson, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road just ahead of Goodrich. Ford slowed and attempted to turn left into a driveway, and Goodrich’s vehicle struck Ford’s vehicle as Goodrich attempted to pass on the left.

No injuries were reported.

Goodrich was given a verbal warning for unsafe passing.

Failure To Obey Stop Sign

Newtown Police report Erick Soares-Martins, 31, of Bethel, operating a 2011 Ford Edge, was attempting to make a left turn onto Hawleyville Road from Currituck Road at 12:01 am May 9. Charles Ryan, 63, of Trumbull, operating a 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road. Police say Soares-Martins made a left turn onto Hawleyville Road and his vehicle was struck by Ryan’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.

Soares-Martins was given an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign and operating without a license.

Collision At On-Ramp

Newtown Police report Catherine Hanley, 19, of Brookfield, operating a 2018 Volvo XC90, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road and turning left onto the Interstate 84 exit 10 westbound on-ramp at 3:01 pm May 9. Donna Locke, 61, of Newtown, operating a 2010 Audi A4, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road. Hanley stated to police that she thought she had right-of-way and turned left. Locke said she had a green light and Hanley turned into her path, causing a collision.

No injuries were reported.

Hanley was issued an infraction for failure to yield while making a left turn.

Lost Control Of Vehicle

Newtown Police report Jessica Bremser, 26, of Brookfield, operating a 2016 Honda Civic, was traveling westbound on Currituck Road at 8:36 am May 11. While traveling, Bremser lost control of the vehicle and it struck the westbound lane curbing before continuing off the roadway. Police say Bremser’s vehicle then crossed over Currituck Road and struck the eastbound lane’s curbing, then continuing straight off the roadway and into a culvert before coming to rest on its left side.

Bremser was transported to Danbury Hospital for possible injuries. The vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Violated Protective Order

Newtown Police report James Principi, 41, of Bethel, was arrested at 9:32 pm May 12 on the charge of violation of a protective order.

He was released on a $500 cash bond with a court date of May 13 in Danbury Superior Court.

Pulled From Driveway, Hit Car

Newtown Police report Scott Fera, 69, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Mercedes-Benz E3504m, was exiting a driveway on Hawleyville Road at 8:04 am May 13. Aaron Lukse, 33, of New Milford, was stopped southbound on Hawleyville Road near the driveway. Fera entered the roadway and the front of his vehicle made contact with the driver’s side of Lukse’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Fera was given a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at a private driveway.

Hit And Run Incident

Newtown Police report that a dark grey dump truck was involved in a hit and run crash on South Main Street at 9:49 am May 14. Irene Maldonado, 61, of Aquada, Puerto Rico, operating a 2019 Nissan Kick, was traveling north on South Main Street and came to a stop approximately 200 feet north of Mile Hill Road after seeing a road repair patch in the roadway ahead. While stopped, police say the dump truck attempted to pass Aquada, and made contact with the passenger side front fender, passenger side door and passenger side front tire of Maldonado’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Police Respond To Fist Fight

Newtown Police report that on May 14, officers of the Newtown Police Department were dispatched to 18 Riverside Road for the report of a fight in progress.

Following an investigation on scene, Ronald Good, 60, of Cottageville, S.C., was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct. He was held on a $500 cash bond with a court date of May 16 in Danbury Superior Court.

Also arrested and charged with disorderly conduct was Joel Good, 36, of Port St Lucie, Fla.

Following Too Closely

Newtown Police report Bekim Imeroski, 22, of Waterbury, operating a 2016 GMC Sierra, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 7:09 pm May 16. Imeroski was traveling behind a 2011 Toyota Sienna operated by Sarah Katrulya, 46, of Woodbury. Police say Katrulya began slowing to stop at a traffic control signal at the intersection of South Main Street and Mile Hill Road, which was turning red. Imeroski was unable to stop behind Katrulya, and the right front bumper of his vehicle struck the left rear bumper of Katrulya’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Imeroski was issued an infraction for following too closely resulting in an accident.

Creating A Public Disturbance

Newtown Police report Courtney Flaherty, 49, of Newtown, was arrested at 4:10 am May 18 on the charges of refusal by an operator to show license and registration, illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and creating a public disturbance. She was released on a $1,000 bond with a court date of June 1 in Danbury Superior Court.
