Is There A Message In The Medium?

DANBURY — “Blood, Spit and Coffee” will be a one-day workshop at Wooster Community Art Center led by Gabrielle Senza that will take a look at the work of contemporary artists who incorporate unorthodox painting and drawing materials in their art. It seeks to answer such questions as What motivated these artists to use these materials? and What can the viewer interpret from these works?

The workshop will include two facets: a slide presentation and a short course in drawing. In the slide presentation,  documented ideas behind selected  works will be presented, and participants will interpret the work themselves and also discuss some of the ideas that may have inspired them.

Works to be discussed include drawings done with hare’s blood by Joseph Buey’s, Donald Sultan’s tar and linoleum paintings, Jim Toia’s frog egg drawings, Vik Muniz’s realist drawings created in chocolate, and Ms Senza’s own blood and torched linen pieces. Gabrielle Senza had exhibited her works in New York City and Connecticut, and her art is in numerous corporate, public and private collections.

In the time between the slide presentation and drawing course, a reception will be held . The used coffee grounds will be utilized during the class.

The workshop is set for Sunday, June 24, from noon to 5 pm, and is $85 per person. For more information, call 744-4825.
