Stapleton, Et Al, Returning To Hartford Stage

HARTFORD — Michael Wilson, the director of Hartford Stage, has announced the casting for the world premier of Horton Foote’s The Carpetbagger’s Children, to be produced in collaboration with Houston’s Alley Theater (who commissioned the play) and Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater.

The Carpetbagger’s Children will open the Tony Award-winning Hartford Stage’s 2001-02 season with a limited 22 performance run, September 6 through September 23.

Mr Wilson, who previously directed the premiere performances of Foote’s The Death of Papa, has enlisted Hartford Stage veterans Hallie Foote, Roberta Maxwell and Jean Stapleton to star in the production.

The play is a poignant memoir recounted by the three surviving daughters of a Union Army soldier who arrived in Texas during the Civil War. Branded the children of opportunistic carpetbagger from the North who profited from the antebellum financial ruin in the South, the sisters struggle to maintain family unity and the legacy their father left behind.
