Red Cross Honors Nickse

FARMINGTON — Jeffery Nickse of Newtown received the honorary Bill Savitt Award at the American Red Cross Multi-Gallon Blood Donor Hall of Fame Awards dinner, held recently at the Hartford Marriott Farmington.

Mr Nickse, whose blood donations have reached the 10-gallon mark, had simple reasons for having participated in blood drives for so many years.

Bill Savitt, well known for his jewelry business in Hartford, was very proud of American Red Cross blood donors and the lifesaving gift they offer. In 1982 he provided a grant to begin the annual recognition event, the Multi-Gallon Blood Donors Hall of Fame. It takes many years of dedication to reach this milestone because a donor is only eligible to donate every 56 days.

Nearly half the population will require blood within their lifetime, so it is crucial that people continually donate blood on a regular basis. About a pint is taken at each donation and every donation can help save or prolong the lives of up to three hospital patients in Connecticut.
