Around The Horn — Baseball Results

Youth baseball game highlights from this past week are as follows:

Midgets

The Stratton-Faxon Phillies were scorching hot on Memorial Day Saturday. Steven Berard, Andrew Kugler, and Julian Crone all pitched well on the mound. Matthew Berard and Steven Cotton played heads-up defense, recording outs on the base paths. Colin Adis, Andon Bambino, and Connor Faxon all had nice hits to the outfield.

The Landscaping Unlimited Yellow jackets played good all-around baseball on Saturday. Tyler Harrison, Noah DiNallo, and Eric Gray each displayed some excellent pitching. They were backed up by some great defensive plays by Benjamin Ochs at first base, Devin Herbstman at second, and a diving catch by Jake Hossler in left field. The whole team did great at the plate as well, including multiple singles by Sam Cannizzo and RJ Eller and a double by Walker Previdi off of a huge hit into right field.

The Network Synergy Black Knights got big hits from Gregory Gargano, Ryan Heran, and James Ciaramello. Jake Mailloux had two hits. Brendan Adams, Miller Tetreault, and Noah Clark hustled in the field, helping support the strong pitching of Heran, Gargano, and Mailloux.

The Hollandia Smashers were led by strong pitching performances from Daniel DeBartolomeo, Peter Reelick, and Karl Miller. Joseph DiMaria had four hits and scored three runs and Evan Casagrande collected two hits and knocked in two runs. Stephen Mayer had a great all-around game with sharp play at short and second base, along with three base hits.

Royal Rascals played their first nail-biter of the year with four scoreless innings before the flood gates opened. Matt Sortino, Matthew Pietrorazio, and Zachary Kugler rounded out the rotation and did their job keeping the ducks off the pond. Stout defense was played in the field by Ben Watson, Robbie Accomando, and Nick Sortino. Trevor Jacozzi kept the hot corner percolating with key put-puts and Zack Majeski’s nose for the play kept runners from crossing home plate.

Royal Rascals played another spirited game against their opponent. Nick Sortino, Zack Majeski, Zack Kugler, and Trevor Jacozzi chewed up innings on the mound while Daniel Lounsbury, Athan Tavar, Matt Sortino, and Robbie Accomando provided plenty of offense. Ben Watson recorded his first assist of the year with a heads-up play from center field to an alert Matt Pietrorazio on second, swiping the base runner and preventing a double.

Art and Frame of Danbury was led by the pitching of Hayden Miller, Wiley Harris, and Michael Early. Miller also collected four hits, including a long triple that went all the way to the fence. William Hornby made several nice defensive plays at second base and Timmy Vigneau had two hits. Trevor Hislop had a great game behind the plate and Travis McClay was sparkling at first base, recording three putouts. Matthew DeMott had a solid game in the field and batting, collecting two hits. Sean O’Sullivan earned the badge of courage as he collected two hits while swinging one handed due to a cast on his left arm.

Apex Glass: The pitching rotation of Connor Smith, Ryan McMahon, and Owen Browne combined for a strong effort on the mound this week, with Connor and Ryan recording strikeouts. Offensive MVPs were Andrew McMahon who had two hits, including an RBI single, Tommy Gies who had a line drive single to left field and run scored, Ryan McMahon who kept a rally alive with a two-strike single, and Cooper Agresta who had two hits in the game. The defensive MVP was Zander Kasbarian, who made three plays to record outs at shortstop and also made an outstanding catch in right field to end an inning. Matthew McMahon played solid defense at second base and in center field. George Sandercox, Drew Poseno, Michael Jewell, and Edwin Tout all contributed with base hits in the game.

This week the Bombers played outstanding offense and defense with only seven players. Pitching this weekend was led by James Celentano three strikeouts, Ryan Verdi and David Braun recorded two strikeouts each. Shayne Frate, Kyle Pettit, and Zach Katsuleres along with Nicholas Sabillon lead the Bombers offense, while James Celentano had three long doubles to center field. David Braun had some awesome defensive catches in the field.

11 Year Olds

Sugar Hill Auto Sharks 12, Ferro Financial Green Machine 6: The Sugar Hill Auto Sharks came back from a 5-run deficit to earn a win against the Green Machine 12-6. The leading pitchers for the Sharks were John Finnegan, Ryan Mailloux, Harry Lucas, and Robert Murray. Lucas, Finnegan, and Murray also had multihit games, while Brandon Giglio had a clutch base hit to keep the Shark rally going. Justin Kahn and Connor Dinallo both gave solid efforts in the field. Matt Jewell and Nicolas Stowell led the Green Machine with strong play. Jackson Dooley and Kyle Roche pitched well, while Jack Swanson and Tyler Trede were key on the defense in the loss.

Ages 14-15

Newtown Rich’s Keys and Locks 9, Newtown Teamsters Local Union (1150) 8: The Lock Pickers won an exciting extra innings affair against their intertown rivals Friday night, under the lights at Fairfield Hills. After a back and forth game, the Lock Pickers found themselves trailing by 2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brandon O’Sullivan came to bat with a man on second and third and two outs. O’Sullivan worked a full count and then delivered a crushing hit over the centerfielder’s head on the payoff pitch for a stand-up double and a game-tying two RBI. Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh, so the game moved to extra innings. T

he Lock Pickers held the Teamsters scoreless in the top of the eighth and Connor Roche ripped a line drive to right field that was caught by Shawn Cerreta but Jaret DeVellis was able to scamper home after tagging up at third, with the game-winning run. Connor Roche pitched four innings, yielding no earned runs and Jack Procaccini pitched the final two innings, surrendering only one hit, while recording three strikeouts, to pick up the win. Michael Doyle contributed an RBI double and Sam Czel went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Both Doyle and Czel pitched an inning as well. Jaret DeVellis finished the game 1-for-4, with an RBI and two runs scored. Jack Procaccini, Pat Pierce, and Justin Appley also contributed base hits in the win.
