Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Tuesday, June 12, from 5 to 7 pm is game night.

*A 40s Swing Dance Party at Villa Bianca will be Wednesday, June 13. An all-you-can-eat family-style luncheon, complimentary drink, live entertainment, music and dancing are all included for $29.95 per person. The van can accommodate 16 and will depart at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool.

*Westchester Broadway Theater is presenting a luncheon and a matinee titled George M on Thursday, June 14. The play is based on the life of George M. Cohan. Depart on Thursday, June 14, at 9:45 am; cost is $90.

*“End Stage Dementia and Hospice” is the Lunch and Learn Series topic for Friday, June 15, at noon. Learn how to identify significant symptoms of end-stage dementia and how hospice care can help. Lunch is provided; call to reserve.

*AARP Safe Driving class is on Friday, June 15, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Space is limited to 20 people. Call Senior Center for reservation; $12 for AARP member and $14 nonmember, payable on day of class.

*This is an updated list of canceled classes: No Chair Yoga or Zumba: June 15 and 22; No Exercise: June 15, 22, 25 and 27.

 

Upcoming Programs

*On the third Monday of every month, there will be a bake sale from 9 to 10 am. We are looking for donations of baked goods to be brought in before that time.

*Bingo will be Wednesday, June 20, at 1 pm.

*Life Line Screening will be performing a day of preventive health screenings on June 22. These are fast, painless and offered at low cost. They involve ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries that can lead to a stroke; aortic aneurysms that can lead to a rupture; and plaque buildup in the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. Appointments are limited and registration is required.

*“Helping Caregivers When a Loved One is Seriously Ill” is the Lunch and Learn Series topic for Friday, July 20, at noon. Learn how to help and support families, as well as their loved ones with the physical and emotional demands of care for the seriously ill. Lunch is provided; call to reserve.

Day Trips

*On Monday, June 18, at the Grand Oak Villa, Oakville, comes the stage comedy, The Queen of Bingo, in the tradition of the Harvey Korman and Tim Conway sketches. The Queen of Bingo explores the world of Bingo, family ties, diet crazes, widowhood, hot flashes, and winning! An appetizer and a family-style meal is included. Limited seating of 16. Depart at 10:30 am; cost is $59.

*On Tuesday, June 26, visit Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, N.Y., the “unspoiled resort,” a Victorian-style castle sitting lakeside, with 2,000-plus wooded acres and views galore. Have lunch at the Grand Buffet; enjoy a concert, music acts vary from classical to contemporary, Broadway to Big Band; stroll through the award-winning gardens; and visit Mohonk Barn Museum, one of the largest barns in the Northeast, built in 1888. Cost is $96; departure TBA.

*Day trips and overnight booklets are now completed. Stop by the Newtown Senior Center to get one.

Monday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm, chorus/sing-along; 1:30 pm, art class. 2 pm yoga.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards For Troops; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30, line dancing; noon, lunch; 2 pm, tai chi; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Wednesday: 10 am, bridge or pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 2:30 pm, Bridges.

Thursday: 10 am, board games or pinochle; 10:30 am Iris fold cards; noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble, 1 pm, yoga.

Friday: 9 am, mah jongg; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, quilting and exercise; noon, knit or crochet.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table, and various board games.

 

Menu For Week Of

June 4–8

Monday: Cold cut grinder with turkey, salami, ham and cheese, mustard and mayonnaise, coleslaw, pickle, brownie.

Tuesday: Baked ziti with cheese, sausage, parmesan cheese, tossed salad with cucumber, Italian dressing, Italian bread, grape juice, peaches.

Wednesday: Chicken noodle soup, hot open turkey sandwich on oat bread with gravy, cranberry sauce, mixed vegetables, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Thursday: Stuffed salmon with dill sauce or grilled chicken with dill sauce, orzo pilaf, broccoli, wheat dinner rolls, grapes.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, June 11: Herb baked chicken quarter, brown rice pilaf, California blend vegetables, pumpernickel bread, melon.

Tuesday, June 12: Corn chowder, seafood salad plate with lettuce and tomato, three-bean salad, Portuguese roll, pineapple tidbits.
