Struck Tree

Newtown Police report Hector Veras, 45, of Danbury, operating a 2017 Honda Civic, was traveling northbound on Great Ring Road at 4:22 pm May 11. An oncoming vehicle entered Veras' lane, who swerved off road to avoid the collision, instead striking a tree.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Stopped For School Bus, Hit By Car

Newtown Police report Anthony Morales, 29, of Torrington, operating a 2003 Ford Ranger, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street at 4:09 pm May 15. He was traveling behind a 2024 GMC Sierra operated by Karyn Hoffman, 41, of Bridgeport. Hoffman stopped due to a school bus stopping in the roadway and was rear-ended by Morales' vehicle.

Hoffman was transported to Danbury Hospital for a possible injury.

Morales was issued a written warning for following too close.

Unsafe Backing

Newtown Police report James Pearson, 21, of New Haven, operating a 2025 Rivian Edv 700 delivery van, was reversing northbound on Sand Hill Road at 3:55 pm May 16. Phoebe Jones, 17, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2016 Honda CR-V, was traveling southbound on Sand Hill Road. Pearson backed into Jones' vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Pearson was issued an infraction for unsafe backing.

Collision In Intersection

Newtown Police report Sophia Baroody, 18, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Subaru Legacy, was traveling southbound on Walnut Tree Hill Road at 7:55 am May 18. Nicholas Desrosiers, 37, of Orlando, Fla., operating a 2020 Cadillac Xt6, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road. Baroody stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Church Hill Road, and then tried to make a left turn, striking Desrosiers' vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Desrosiers' vehicle was towed.

Baroody was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way from a stop sign.

Struck Guardrail

Newtown Police report Peter Chinga, 19, of Danbury, operating a 2021 Toyota 4Runner, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road at 11:48 am May 18. Chinga's vehicle crossed over the roadway, making contact with the guardrail on the eastbound shoulder.

No injuries were reported. Chinga's vehicle was towed.

Chinga was issued a verbal warning for failure to travel in the proper lane.

Integra Hits Altima

Newtown Police report Christopher Dube, 63, of Bethel, operating a 2024 Acura Integra, was traveling westbound on High Bridge Road at 3:51 pm May 18. Arva Mengold, 78, of Southbury, operating a 2022 Nissan Altima, was traveling northbound on Botsford Hill Road. Dube came to the stop sign and entered Botsford Hill Road, and struck Mengold's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.

Dube was issued an infraction for failure to stop at a stop sign.

BB Gun Shooter Arrested

Newtown Police report that at 5:48 pm May 19, officers were dispatched to a residence on Waterview Drive for the report of a man who shot a passing vehicle with a BB gun.

Upon arrival, officers located John Burns, 82, of Newtown, and placed him under arrest. Burns was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree breach of peace, and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Burns was released on a $5,000 non-surety bond and given a court date of June 3 in Danbury Superior Court.

Broke Axle

Newtown Police report Ryan Orell, 22, of Bethel, operating a 1999 Toyota 4Runner, was traveling northbound on Boggs Hill Road at 9:50 pm May 19. The right front wheel of Orell's vehicle struck a storm grate, causing the front right axle to break. The vehicle then crossed the double yellow line and southbound traffic lane, exited the shoulder, and struck a stone wall off the roadway.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Orell was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain a lane.

Struck By Deer

Newtown Police report Jared Modzelewski, 35, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Honda Pilot, was traveling northbound on Elm Drive at 8:33 am May 20. A deer entered the roadway, striking Modzelewski's vehicle.

Modzelewski was not injured. The vehicle was not towed.

Collision At NHS

Newtown Police report Madison Slater, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Jeep Patriot, was in the parking lot of Newtown High School at 11:49 am May 20. While turning left into traffic, her vehicle struck a Nissan Rogue operated by Vincent Okane, 18, of Newtown.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Unlicensed, Uninsured, Unregistered

Newtown Police report that on May 20, officers performed a traffic stop on Toddy Hill Road after observing a vehicle with no front registration plate and determining that the rear plate belonged on a different vehicle. It was discovered that the vehicle also had no insurance and a revoked registration. It was also determined that the operator provided a family member's driver's license to officers in an attempt to hide the fact his driving privileges were suspended.

Tarquino Cardenas, 62, of Danbury, was arrested and charged with improper use of marker plates, illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, criminal impersonation, illegal operation of a motor vehicle with a revoked registration, and interfering with an officer/resisting arrest.

Cardenas was released on a $1,000 bond with a court date of June 4 in Danbury Superior Court.

Larceny Charge

Newtown Police report that on May 22, Jessica Newman, 44, of Monroe, turned herself in to Newtown Police Department on an active warrant for her arrest. She was taken into custody and charged with sixth-degree larceny. Newman was released on a promise to appear with a court date of June 11 in Danbury Superior Court.

Found Money

On May 22, cash money was found on Jo Mar Drive, in the area of Riverside Road, and turned in to Newtown Police Department. Anyone with any information or wishing to claim it can contact Sergeant Lorancaitis at 203-426-5841.

Hit Three Mailboxes, Pole

Newtown Police report Benjamin Williams, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2020 Honda CR-V, was traveling eastbound on Riverside Road at 1:53 am May 23. His vehicle crossed the centerline and ran off the roadway left, striking three mailboxes and then a utility pole.

Williams reported minor injuries but declined transport. The vehicle was towed.

Williams was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
