Soaring With the Eagles, a free camp for blind or visually impaired children, is being offered this year through the Leaps of Faith (LOF) Adaptive Skiers. LOF coordinators and volunteers will be hosting the innovative four-day adaptive water sports day camp for children ages 6 to 17 from June 24-27 in Sandy Hook.

Soaring with the Eagles is the only camp of its kind in Connecticut.

“There are currently no multi-day adaptive waterski/wakeboard camps for visually impaired/blind children in the Northeast and we are very excited to be hosting this unique water sports camp,” said LOF Adaptive Skiers Executive Director Joel Zeisler. Openings for the free camp are still available; advance registration is required. Lunch, snacks and refreshments will be served daily.

The camp’s goal is to use water sports activities to enhance the physical fitness and independence of the children. Visual impairments often prevent children from participating in team sports, such as baseball or football, for example. However, children with visual impairments can easily learn to wakeboard and water ski on their own, and the more physically active they are the more easily they can move through activities of daily living.

“We’ve designed this camp to be instructive but also a lot of fun. We’re hoping that in addition to learning a new sport, the kids will leave with a few new lifelong friends,” said Mr Zeisler.

The camp will focus on water safety and waterskiing and wakeboarding instruction.

Founded in 1991 and located on Lake Zoar in Sandy Hook, LOF Adaptive Skiers is a place where children, adults, and wounded veterans with disabilities come to meet for life-changing adaptive sports experiences and meaningful connections. Proud to be a leader in adaptive waterskiing, LOF Adaptive Skiers runs one of the largest and safest adaptive water sports programs in the country.

In addition to waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing and kayaking, LOF Adaptive Skiers offers beginner level snow ski and snowboard instruction during the winter months For more information, call 203-426-0666 or visit LOFAdaptiveSkiers.org.
