On a glorious holiday weekend, the Hurricanes (Girls U13), Rampage (Girls U12) and Raptors (Boys U12) captured championships in their respective divisions in the Newtown Soccer Club’s 22ndannual Memorial Day Kick-Off Soccer Tournament.

For the Hurricanes, it was their second consecutive Kick-Off title and they did it by going 2-0-2 for the weekend. The Rampage went 3-0-1 (while allowing just one goal) and the Raptors went 4-0-0 (while out-scoring their opponents 12-2).

The Navigators (Girls U14), Strikers (Boys U11), Crusaders (Boys U10) and Power (Girls U10) performed well over the weekend, too, except they were unable to come away with a championship. Here are all the results:

Hurricanes

The Hurricanes scored just five goals all weekend, but due to the tremendous effort of goaltender Emily Kluga those five goals were good enough for two wins and a tie.

In a 1-0 win over Monroe, Cassie David scored the lone goal while Molly Curry and Adelle Cerreta turned in impressive defensive efforts. Genna Scheuerell shone offensively. In a 1-1 tie with Terryvlle, Katie Serock’s first-half goal gave the ‘Canes a brief lead. Danielle Norris and Kelley Sullivan powered the offense.

In a 2-2 tie with Sachem, Mary Bloshuk scored off an assist from Cassie David and then Sarah Shannon added an unassisted goal to lead the ‘Canes. Emily Weber, Jen Brewer and Belle Hydock continued to fend off Sachem, but late in the second half they scored on a penalty kick and the game ended in a tie. And in a 1-0 win over Fairfield, Colleen Thornberg scored the lone goal to lift the ‘Canes. Haley Keane and Cara Colacurcio were strong on offense while Curry sparkled on defense in front of Kluga.

Raptors

The Raptors offense was in high gear throughout the weekend and did not slow down until the locals had captured the divisional championship.

In a 5-1 win over Ansonia, Andy Lapple and Chris McCann scored two goals apiece while Colin Jacob notched one. In a 3-1 win over Easton, Adam Buccino, Daniel Greenwood and Kyle Kromberg powered the offense as Ben Mahony, Eric Keogler and Matt Slattery anchored the defense.

In a 3-1 win over Terryville, Long Island, Benjamin Miles, Danny Clement, George Zaruba and Gene Kallivrousis played well. And in a 1-0 win over Westport, Matt Iassogna, Xjulio Halili and guest player Matt Baier played strong for Newtown. The lone goal came off the foot of Chris McCann with less then two minutes to go in overtime.

Rampage

Defense, defense, defense.

Katie Pessin, Kate Bowen, Taylor Smith, Berenice Bryant, Ally Modzelewski and Jennifer Daily leading the way, the Rampage allowed just one goal in four games and rolled to the Girls U12 division championship.

The Rampage scored all five of their goals via strategies on corner plays, with the highlight being an outstanding header by Laura Bittman.

In a 2-1 win over Ridgefield, Smith boomed a long shot to the corner of the net off an assist from Bowen to score the first goal of the tournament. Sara Kelley also found the net off an assist from Smith to complete the scoring for Newtown. Modzelewski was outstanding on defensive while Jordyn Good, Kirsten Hudock and Laetitia de Brantes played well at midfield.

In a 0-0 tie against Fairfield, Kristen Tanner and Susan Mason played well at forward while midfielders Hudock and Caleigh Boyle played well. Pessin registered five saves to preserve the shutout while Daily was exceptional at stopper.

In a 2-0 win over Brookfield, Hannah Basch-Gould banged in an early goal off an assist from Bowen to jumpstart the offense. In the second half, Bittman electrified the fans as she headed in the final goal off an assist from Smith. Bowen played tough at sweeper while Pessin had nine saves in net to record the shutout.

And in a 1-0 win over North Babylon, New York, Kelley scored the winning goal off an assist from Mason. The Newtown defense was flawless behind the play of Bryant and Modzelewski. Jordyn Good, de Brantes, Hannah Basch-Gould, Tanner and Boyle played well to lead Newtown to victory.

The Rampage is coached by Peter D’Amico (head coach), Nancy Bowen, Francois de Brantes and Matt Miller.

Navigators

Harriet Morgan scored five goals, but the Navigators only went 1-1-1 before dropping a tough, 5-0, decision to Bethel in the final game.

In a 6-0 win over Ansonia to open the tournament, Morgan scored four times while Ashley Braun and Emily Lockhart scored one apiece. Genna Scheuerell played well in the midfield while Katie Power recorded the shutout in goal.

In a 1-1 tie with Danbury, an early goal by Morgan on a breakaway powered the ‘Gators into the lead. After Jacqui Kirol’s long-range free kick just failed to hit target, Danbury rallied to tie. Jackie Petrasanta, Christie Attanasio, Kendra O’Connor and Claire Ober were tough on D.

In a 2-1 loss to Putnam, Eva Cerreta, Alana Bilangi, Lauren Hebert and Marina Virgalla battled in the midfield to lead the ‘Gators. Kirol scored the lone Newtown goal in the dying minutes of the game and was unlucky not to equalize from a direct free kick from the 18-yard line.

In the 5-0 loss to Bethel, the Gators were beaten by a strong, aggressive and competitive Bethel offensive unit, resulting in a fourth place finish overall for a Navigators team competing in the U14 girls bracket of eight teams.

Strikers

A lot of offense, but not quite enough to lift the Strikers to a division title.

In a 4-1 win over Trumbull, Dan Lynch scored the lone Newtown goal off an assist by Kai Aschick. Nick Wright, Patrick Fay, James Truckle, Michael Gould and Ryan Pasko played well. In a 3-0 win over Ridgefield, Kyle Moore scored twice while Ishan Tatake added a solo. Aschick and Eric Thornberg had assists while Max Brazo, Michael Gould and Tony Vacaro anchored the defense. Daniel Hufziger and Aaron Nezvesky played well.

In a 3-2 loss to Newington, Thornberg and Moore scored the goals. Vacaro and Thornberg had assists as James Truckle and Brazo were strong on defense. Hufziger, Wright and Pasko played well. In a 6-2 win over Greenwich, Moore scored four goals and Wright and Thornberg added one apiece. Vacaro, Thornberg and Lynch provided assists. Josh Engler was back and was strong in defense! Nezvesky, Aschick and Fay played well. Ishan Tatake held off Greenwich in the goal.

Crusaders

Conrad Normann scored three goals and Ryan Dunnigan added two to lead the Crusaders to a 2-1-2 record in the tournament.

In a 1-1 tie with Easton, Dunnigan scored the only goal on a penalty kick. Colin Cooper and Travis LeBlanc played great offense. Dan Gallagher and Josh Barrett were strong on defense and Normann was awesome in the goal. In a 1-0 loss to New Jersey, Sean Burson and Jason Marks played strong offense with Hank Helgren and Adam Ellison playing tough at midfield. Gallagher and LeBlanc played well on defense.

In a 0-0 tie with Terryville, Long Island, Cooper and Marks played well on offense with Burson and Andre Capozziello strong at halfback. Justin Brophy played well in the net. In a 2-1 win over Southbury, Normann scored both goals with strong midfield support from Dunnigan, Cooper and Ellison. Burson was tough on offense as LeBlanc and Gallagher were solid on defense. Barrett played well in the net.

And in a 2-0 win over Sachem, Long Island, Dunnigan and Normann scored the goals with offensive support from Marks and Capozziello. Barrett played awesome defense and Brophy was great in the goal.

Power

Live by the sword or die by the sword – that seemed to be the fate of the Power.

Winning four (in a row) and losing two, the Power saw all six games over the weekend decided by shutout. The locals opened with a 1-0 win over Brookfield on a goal by Molly Mahony and assist by Christina Caporale and followed up with a 1-0 win over Ridgefield Gold on a goal by Nora Murphy. The winning streak continued with a 1-0 win over Ridgefield White on a penalty kick by Kelley Gaston and extended to four games with a 2-0 win over Terryville, Long Island, on a pair of penalty kicks by Gaston.

The winning streak ended, though, in a 1-0 loss to Monroe. The Power then fell, 1-0, to Sachem, New York to close out the tournament.

Kendall Svanda played superbly throughout the weekend.
