Second grade students at Head O' Meadow Elementary School clapped, sang and stomped Monday, May 23, at the school's second annual International Folk Dance Festival.

The students performed dances from seven different counties, music teacher Cynthia Holberg said, including Israel, Mexico and Ireland. Kindergarten and first grade students watched the performance, as well as family members of the performers.

"[Folk dancing is] a fun way to introduce culture to the students," Ms Holberg said. She added that dancing connects students to a culture in a "three-dimensional way."

The students danced to songs solely, with other members of their class or with the entire second grade. Songs performed included the Native American "The Earth is Our Mother" and the Mexican "Los Machetes."

Family members did more than just watch the performance, as some were invited onstage to participate in an Israeli dance, typically performed at weddings, with the entire second grade.
