November has its turkey, February has its valentines, but in Connecticut — and here in Newtown — June is dog license month. And this weekend also offers a opportunity to get your lovable pooches their rabies vaccines if inclined to do so.

Town Clerk Debbie Halstead is reminding Newtown dog owners with dogs six months of age and over that those pets must be licensed annually during the month of June.

And her office is making it easier by offering a mail-in option.

The State of Connecticut also requires all dogs to have rabies vaccinations.

Therefore, Ms Halstead said when licensing a dog, it will be necessary to present current rabies vaccination certificate, not the tag.

Anyone wishing or needing to get their dog or cat vaccinated against rabies can do so during Newtown’s annual Rabies Clinic Saturday, June 8, from 9 to 11 am. The clinic is held in the Edmond Town Hall lower gymnasium, 45 Main Street.

This walk-in clinic (no appointment necessary), is supported by the Mt Pleasant Hospital for Animals, and each pet costs $20 — cash only. No checks or credit cards are accepted.

If licensing a dog for the first time, owners can present a spaying or neutering certificate in order to receive a lower license fee.

Those fees are $8 for a neutered male or spayed female and $19 for unaltered dogs.

Licenses may be ordered by mail by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope with a check or money order for the proper amount and the following information:

Rabies certificate, spay or neuter certificate, owner’s name, phone number, address, dog’s name, breed, age of dog, color markings, and sex of dog.

Mail to: Town Clerk’s Office, 3 Primrose Street, Newtown, CT 06470.

To provide a fun incentive, each year, the town clerk holds a “#1 Dog Tag” drawing.

During the first week of July, the Ms Halstead will pull a license from all those that have registered through June 30, and that randomly chosen pet will have the honor of wearing Newtown’s #1 Dog Tag and will receive a gift certificate from Your Healthy Pet.

For further information, call the Town Clerk’s office during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm, 203-270-4210.

Vet Tech Mary Simpson, Rummy the lab, and Dr Akesh Vali, DVM of Mt Pleasant Hospital for Animals joined Newtown Town Clerk Debbie Halstead, center, reminding all local dog and cat owners about the upcoming June 8 cash only rabies clinic coming to the Edmond Town Hall gym from 9 to 11 am. —Bee Photo, Voket
