Newtown Police have arrested and charged a local a juvenile, by arrest warrant, for cybercrimes that were committed in autumn 2020.

The juvenile, not named due to their age, was charged with nine counts total for three crimes: three counts of ridicule on account of race, three counts of computer crime-fifth degree, and three counts of disorderly conduct.

The arrest was made, according to a May 29 post on the police department’s Facebook page, at the conclusion of a six-month-long police investigation. Unknown persons accessed Google Classrooms at Newtown High School and used racial epithets in an abusive and disruptive manner, according to the post.

Newtown Police Department Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde said the lengthy investigation was led by School Resources Officer (SRO) William Chapman.

“The extensive investigation required the use of multiple search warrant applications and computer forensics to be served on internet platforms used by the suspected juvenile,” Bahamonde said. “Computer crime investigations tend to be lengthy in time and complicated. It is a credit to the resolute SRO Chapman and [Newtown PD SRO William] Monckton displayed in this investigation,” Bahamonde added.

The juvenile was released into the custody of his parents with a date to appear in Bridgeport Juvenile Court.
