Free Seminar On Arthritis Pain Management

HARTFORD — The Arthritis Foundation and the Estuary Council of Senior Clubs will co-sponsor a free seminar on arthritis pain

management, June 16, 1 to 2:30 pm at M. Monica Eggert Senior Center in Old Saybrook. Susan Nesci, CHES, program director for the Arthritis Foundation, will introduce arthritis self-management techniques in the “Break the Arthritis Pain Cycle” seminar.

Arthritis researchers at Stamford University designed the seminar to help people with osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, or rheumatoid arthritis learn new ways to manage pain. The seminar includes an introduction to arthritis and review of the three most common types. It  focuses on the pain cycle and how to use physical and mental exercises to manage pain. There is a short section on questions to ask before trying an alternative treatment. The seminar also reviews how Arthritis Foundation’s services, such as exercise programs, can help manage pain.

Arthritis affects an estimated 500,000 state residents. It is the leading cause of disability, according to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC estimates that the number of people affected will grow dramatically in the next two decades as baby boomers age.

Seating is limited and pre-registration is required. For more information or to pre-register for the seminar, contact the Arthritis Foundation at 800/541-8350 or info.sne@arthritis.org.
