The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that traffic will be shifted on Interstate 84 to rehabilitate the bridges over Center Street in Newtown.  The shifts on Interstate 84 are scheduled for Tuesday night, June 10, 2014 for I-84 eastbound and Thursday, June 12 for I-84 westbound.

The work for the traffic shift includes relocation of temporary precast barrier, removal of current pavement markings and installation of new pavement markings for the alignment change, and necessary signing and mobilization of equipment.

The project involves the rehabilitation of Bridge Nos. 04255 and 04256 which carry 1-84 over Center Street, a local road in the town of Newtown.  The structures are single-span multi-beam-type structures. Bridge No. 04255, built in 1978, carries two lanes of Interstate 84 eastbound traffic.  Bridge No. 04256, built in 1977, carries two lanes of westbound traffic.  The two bridges are parallel structures, set approximately 90 feet apart and are situated 0.17 miles west of the Housatonic River.

The first traffic shift will occur in the eastbound direction of I-84 and work will begin at 8 pm Tuesday night, June 10, 2014. The new alignment will be in place for commuter traffic at 6 am Wednesday, June 11.  The rain date for this shift is Wednesday night, June 11 to Thursday morning, June 12.

The second traffic shift will occur in the westbound direction of I-84 and work will begin at 8 pm Thursday, June 12.  The rain date is Sunday, June 15 at 8 pm and the new alignment will be completed by 6 am Monday, June 16.

The DOT bridge project was awarded to Manafort Brothers, Inc. at a cost of $5,919,944.30 on August 17, 2012 and is scheduled to be completed in April 2015.
