Volunteer firefighters from Sandy Hook and Botsford responded Wednesday afternoon, June 5, to a report of a leaking propane tank caused by a motor vehicle accident at a residence at Lakeview Terrace Extension in Sandy Hook.

There were no injuries in the 2:06 pm incident, which occurred at the Levitt residence, 42 Lakeview Terrace Extension, said Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company Chief Bill Halstead, who was incident commander.

The fire chief explained that a woman who was driving a compact SUV became involved in a minor collision, after which the vehicle went out of control within a garage that is located beneath the home’s living quarters. The SUV then punctured a garage wall, damaging a propane storage system positioned outside the building. The impact of the crash disconnected a copper tube that carries propane from the tank to the house, thus allowing the volatile gas to escape from its tank.

Firefighters sprayed a “fogstream” of finely-misted water onto the leaking propane to control the problem, he said.

The house remains habitable, the fire chief said, noting that Chief Building Official John Poeltl went to the scene to inspect the impact damage.

An emergency repair company responded to make immediate repairs. Also, the firm that supplies the residence with propane responded to check on the problem.

Police kept motorists in the area well away from the incident, explaining to them that a propane leak had occurred on the spur road that extends from Lakeview Terrace, near Lake Zoar.
