Members of the Newtown Police Department, as well as some staff members from Garner Correctional Institution, are scheduled to participate in the Newtown leg of the annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run on Friday, June 7. (Times listed in this article are approximate).

The runners take part in the event to show their support and help raise funds for the Special Olympics of Connecticut summer games, which will start at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven on June 7.

According to the schedule for the torch run, runners from Bethel are slated to enter Newtown on Dodgingtown Road (Route 302) at about 11:15 am. The Bethel runners will then hand off the torch to Newtown runners in the area near the Dodgingtown Firehouse at 55 Dodgingtown Road at about 11:30 am.

The runners will proceed on Route 302 (Dodgingtown Road/Sugar Street) to its intersection with Main Street, South Main Street, and Glover Avenue. They will then follow Glover Avenue and turn left onto Queen Street, after which they will turn right onto Church Hill Road, following Church Hill Road to Exit 10 of Interstate 84, where they will hand off the torch to state police.

Newtown police and Garner staff members ask that the public observe the torch run and cheer the runners on as they pass through town.

Newtown Police Department and Garner Correctional Institution staff members joined forces last year in running the local leg of the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run through town. They will once again run the local leg this Friday, June 7. —Bee file photo
