Due to today’s inclement weather, the final leg of the Connecticut Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, which was due to pass through Newtown shortly after 11 this morning, has been cancelled.

The torch has been working its way through the state since Wednesday, when it left from Foxwoods following a rally. Additional routes were covered yesterday following a rally in Hartford.

“The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Connecticut — scheduled for Friday, June 7 — will be suspended due to safety reasons caused by weather conditions,” State Police announced via press release this morning.

Those running the routes for the Law Enforcement Torch Run were to meet in New Haven later today.

The final leg of the Torch Run will still be held tonight, however. Law enforcement officers plan to gather at Southern Connecticut State University, site of the 2013 Special Olympics Summer Games for Connecticut.

All Friday track and race walking events will be held inside Moore Field House at SCSU. Opening ceremonies will also take place inside the field house beginning at 7:15 pm. The Summer Games are scheduled to continue on Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9, with track and field, cycling, gymnastics, swimming and tennis competitions at SCSU, and soccer to be played at Hamden Hall in Hamden.
