Elections Have Consequences XXVI
To The Editor:
The conversion of the White House into a three-ring circus has been completed with the addition of the carnival ride looking structure called “The Claw” looming over the People’s House. This is all for the UFC cage fight scheduled for this Sunday, part of our 250th anniversary celebration. It is also Trump’s 80th birthday and a money-making opportunity for Trump and some of his rich friends. There was some concern that the stands might not be filled so members of the military were invited to attend provided they could pay their own expenses, purchase their own tickets and meet certain height and weight requirements.
Last year Trump kicked off the celebrations with a military parade in DC — also on his birthday — which was poorly attended and overshadowed by the First No Kings Rally that brought out 5 million people He then went to Iowa in July, for the first official America 250 event and ranted about how much he hated Democrats.
Last month there was a taxpayer funded evangelical event to “re-dedicate” the nation to Christianity — I seem to recall the Constitution guaranteeing us freedom of religion. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix race through the streets of DC is coming in August – what could possibly go wrong with that? The 16 day “Great American State Fair” on the National Mall is being cut back because most of the headliners dropped out when they realized it was no longer a bipartisan event. It may host a mega MAGA rally celebrating Trump instead.
Other 250th mementos to look forward to are Trump’s image on coins, passports and national park passes and possibly a $250 bill. We can only hope that someone stops the hideous arch he wants to construct across from Arlington Cemetery. Between the Arch and the Ballroom, Trump has taken tacky to a new level.
At this time, we should be coming together to celebrate 250 years of independence, to confirm our support of the Constitution, our trust in the rule of law and our belief that we are all created equal. Instead, we have Trump who is shredding the Constitution, ignoring all the rules and promoting white, Christian nationalism, all with the silent support of submissive Republicans in Congress.
144 Days till November 3.
