Holiday Closings: Juneteenth

The country’s newest federal holiday, Juneteenth will fall this year on Monday, June 19.

Governor Ned Lamont on May 27, 2022, formally signed into law Public Act 22-128, which established Connecticut’s new legal state holiday, known formally as Juneteenth Independence Day.

The effective date of the legislation as approved by the General Assembly was October 1, 2022, meaning this year is the first time Juneteenth Independence Day is being legally recognized as a state holiday in Connecticut.

Federal Reserve Banks and branches will be closed.

There will be no regular United States Postal Service mail delivery.

The decision to close public schools on Juneteenth Independence Day is made by each local school district. By law, each local and regional board of education that remains open on a legal state holiday must hold a suitable educational program in observance of the holiday.

Classes in Newtown Public Schools are scheduled to conclude on June 14.

C.H. Booth Library will be closed.

Town of Newtown officers will be open. Town board and commission meetings are scheduled for that afternoon and evening. Newtown Community Center and Newtown Senior Center will also be open.

The offices of The Newtown Bee will be open. Deadlines for the June 23, 2023 print edition of the newspaper will not be affected.
